MTB - Shorter Stems the way to go?

You are far less likely to ever go OTB with a short stem, but the front may feel a tad less stuck to the track because your weight is rear biased

Doesn't this raise your centre of gravity though? I am battling to "get back" on the bike (always feel like I'm going to to go OTB), running quite a few spacers at present, so my handle bar drop is about 5cm.

Fitted a 60mm stem, didn't enjoy it (had some lower back pain) and put on a 80mm.

What do I need to do?

Bars are 760mm.

Not sure about the CG being affected - your weight is not as far forward but it should not be any higher than with your longer stem. I ride with quite a big seat/bar drop - probably more like 100mm with seat at full extension on a 50mm stem although on steep tech stuff my seat is down 100mm on the dropper which leads to a lower CG especially if you hug the bike,.

Every bike and rider is different and you have to experiment with the set up on different terrain.

Interisting reading, my problem is that of the size of the headtube, quite oversized that makes the bike more upright than my previous and I don't like the feel, so currently riding a 100mm with a -6 degree , was thinking of a 90mm with a -10degree. Any comments

Sounds like Pyga 110 29? By all accounts a great trail bike. You need to use the dropper more perhaps? and be more mobile ie get off the back to avoid that OTB feeling...

I ride a o deg 80mm stem with 710mm bar on a 29er used to ride a 120mm 6 deg stem on a 650mm bar far better control etc now. I definitely wouldnt go back

just received my 60mm stem from performance bikes.

Funn components stryge-looks the business!I can highly recommend these guys. great feedback on all questions and speedy delivery although the courier did make a hash...but thats not their fault.

had 70mm stem before but have gone wider with my bars to 740mm so will have to go test drive tomo and see if it will be different.

My set up:50mm

Becomes VERY responsive indeed.

It will feel switchy to begin with but turns a 29er into a 26er on the single tracks :cursing:

so my feedback after a proper ride.

Giant trance x2 26"

old stem 70mm new 60mm

old bar 685mm new 740

although slight i can definitely feel the difference.

Front pops easier-manuals etc

fast corner(flat & bermed) handling is sharper-probably because getting over the front wheel is easier/shorter?

tech uphill-front wheel does not lift as easy(maybe its just me?)

track stand is now second nature(although not hard before)

no over the bar feeling on steep decent.

most important-no lower back pain :)

That's a big jump ito the bar, so you'll probably find that you'll have fitted on a larger framed bike with the same specs and had the same revelation.

Having said that. Why were you at 680 to begin with!? Anything below 700 is, imo, detrimental to your handling.

I was thinking the same w.r.t larger framed bike while riding today.medium frame with 50mm stem etc...

have been blindly riding the stock bars for the last 2 years-only sneaking the grips out about 1cm on each end, effectively making them 705mm.

my eyes have been opened.
