Is there a difference between a 10spd road chain and a 10spd MTB chain?

Nope not at all.....

The road chains are asymmetrical and optimised for direction.

That is only shimano isn't it?

Hi Wil6

Evobikes has a Xtr chain for R595 and a sram 1091 chain for R575 No xt that is not on spesial but the 1071 chain from sram is now R495. Time to time they do have sram chains cheaper than shimano.

XTR equivalant is the XX chain and its R625. Look closely, the XT 's RRP is R595, where the Sram PC1071 RRP = R695

Just remember that i do get much better discount on sram than shimano when i buy my spares from them as well. In your case you pay more for sram where as i pay more for shimano.

need to come and pick your brains on how to break / replace chain links - upgrading my emergency tool kit and trying to learn how to use the things i carry

Let the master teach you that hehe. I can help on what to carry, a nice chain breaker and some of these, the SRAM 10 speed links aren't reusable, so I rather have some of these in the pack, nice to be able to remove a chain easily to clean it too.

EDIT: Ignore the Campa only, just grabbed the first image

This is my problem. I would love to take my chain off and reuse the link to clean my chain and bike properly every now and then. I sit for a long time with a toothbrush and paintbrush. :( Or am I just doing it all wrong??

I've used the same SRAM 10sp link over and over already. I remove my chain at least once every 3 weeks to do a proper clean. (Google chain link removal tool.)

Then I stand corrected. Struggled like hell to remove a 10sp SRAM powerlink, could not get it loose. While the KMC ones fit like a glove, come loose easy and are cheaper.

Some of the guys will shoot me for this. But I like the chain scrubber and some PowaSol to clean a chain, as long as gunk doesn't build up it cleans perfectly. Then every couple of weeks remove and degrease in poison of choice.

Yip there's a much easier way.

I keep all old plastic containers (mostly screw on lids) then with my chain removal tool I simply click the chain loose and put it in the container with a bit of turps shake a bit and then give one wipe with a wet cloth before putting back on.

You need a pair of master link pliers or similar to remove the 10sp SRAM link, I've taken mine on and off a few times, it definitely is reusable, apparently they state "use once only" on the packaging due to a patent infringement on a "reusable" 10-speed master link , not sure if that's a fire story or not, maybe SRAM didn't want to pay royalties whereas the other manufacturers will.

Just learnt about the master link pliers.....how the heck did I miss that.....will be picking up a pair for sure.
