Heia was fun - will be at Hakahana.

Sugesstion :

At Heia the route suited me fine and I had a good time. However I did feel a slight bit sorry for the newcomers to duathlon as the route was very technical for less proficient riders - maybe ease off of the tech stuff for the 1/2 and 1/4 distances - if you enter the full you know whats coming - the shorter ones, maybe give them a better shot to enjoying the sport rather than scaring them off.

Just my 2 c.

Hey guys, any constructive feedback from the Heia routes?

Congestions? Suggestions?

I am finalizing our routes this week...

The Heia mtb course was technical/awesome but had loong stretches of single track that was tough to overtake on - please try and balance technical versus overtaking. Fast runners with less than optimal mtb tech skills did cause some interesting block passing and hair raising moments :-)

Technical dual single track ala Joberg2c style would be perfect!

Did the half and in the first run the front group of about 10 guys where sent on the final run route, so once we got over that wobbly bridge where told to go right and basically start the run again. There was no marshal at the split point when we started but the signs for the second run where up already so thats what we followed. Was very frustrating as we had to spend the ENTIRE race trying to pass must slower runners/riders and with a lot of lekker single track in the ride it made it tough to pass, awesome route if I could have raced all the way. I raced trailseeker marathon at hakahana few weeks ago and despite the "affirmative shopping"(Tha'ts what the announcer kept calling it) the marashalling and direction boards where brilliant so i'm sure it'll be good again.

Interesting point that - fast runners end up getting chased by fast mtb'ers. I was one of them, I still can't believe how many spots I gave away on the mtb leg. But then, on the final run, I re-collected several spots from okes who used up their legs on the bike and could not properly run that leg. So I think of it this way: this series will teach us all how to a) yield to faster traffic on a regular basis and b) pass slower traffic by deviating from the course because often there's just nowhere for them to go when we approach

Was lots of fun, in a "It's Monday and I'm still sore" kind of way. Definitely in for the next one.

The full trails were great. Amazing views and super scenic routes.

I do wish there were more overtaking spots during the ride, especially around the top of the hill and during some of the switchback parts that followed. Some people are fine and fast on the climbs, then go ultra-granny on descent (which I was looking forward to that entire climb)

Also, wasn't a huge fan of the distance-soaking switchbacks on the grassy hill. The burmed pump track was entertaining but that's about it.

(Rant over)

In sort: Loved it. Will do it again. Will do them all.

Agree with Eldron!!!!! Track was awesome but they needed a bit more jeep track to allow passing.

I am not a runner and hence got stuck behind the runners on the mtb section. I found the course about a 5 out of 10 in terms of being technical. But i was stuck for the 1st couple of km as the not so experienced cyclist stopped and every up or down or rock.

I hated that rat maize near the end, up down up down up down.

Water bridge seemed very unstable and i chose chicken run.

I think I ended up being faster on the runs. I just couldn't find my rhythm on the bike and really had to grind out a finish. A great event with heaps of potential. Would like to see a flatter race in the series...

The water bridge did have a certain swing to it, do we know of any of the slower riders falling off it? The rescue marshall in his paddle boat was very wet, so at least one oke had to have taken a dive :)
