Sad part is the letter reflects the perception a number of motorists have about cyclists and admittedly we all make ourselves guilty of perpetuating this feeling from time to time. It is up to us to make an effort to change the way we spend our time on the road to ensure that we are seen as rightful users of the roads instead of an irritation

Umm, perhaps motorists could do the same?

Conduct themselves as cognitive humans instead of feelingless automatons intent on the destruction of all those in their path?

Well said canis lupus. I have always said that the regulation must come from within and when we collectively start to behave then maybe the favour will be returned.

But then again we are only one of the myriad of road users who believe they have a divine right of use!!

To be honest, I dont care anymore.

I fly solo and look after myself.

My feeling is you can only "take the horse to water - you cant make it drink" and if somebody wants to ride like a "goon" and gets flattened, dont expect me to attend your memorial ride.

100% correct Titus unfortunately any negotiation requires someone to make the first move.

The equation

1 X rider in lycra on sub 10kg carbon/alu/ti/blend     vs 1 X 3ton + aluminium and steel mix

result = odds not stacked in our favour

Maybe a bit of humble pie eating is a small price for the continued use of limbs, organs and basic metabolic function

Then we ask this motor cyclist why are there so manu pf them without number plates on their bikes. Why do they travel at 200km on the highway. Why do they make their bikes so noisy.

I must admist that a friend of mine complains weekly that she gets help up in Greenside by cyclist taking up the whole road. I told he to just drive over them. They are idiots and the world don't need more idiots.

The type of natural selection you hint at doesn't exist in our world Widget. The reality is that generally the goon gets to ride another day and the poor schmuck who behaves gets nailed. The more we self regulate and nail the goon the fewer memorials we should have

The their eyes the motorist is never wrong! Ask me, I was told it was my fault even though the driver of the car 'didn't see me'.

But, unfortunately us cyclists are also in the wrong. If we ride with a bit of courtesy we would get more lee way on the road. But some feel viet it's better to swear at motorists when they are at fault.

Also posted elsewhere..... did not see this post!!!!!!!

Why is it when a normal sane person who has a good job and who may be an accomplished person mounts a bike he becomes a slobbering idiot. Is is physiological or is it phsycological????? Is there some sort of gland that starts overproducing that creates this Jekyl and Hyde personality. I sincerely hope there is a plausible reason for this phenomonon.

During the ARGUS there was a bad fall on the winding doenhill section to Scarborough. Marshalls (yes the plural) were warning other cyclists with red flags, loudhailers, whistles and loud voices. Still a dumb ass on a expensive carbon bike with deep section rims came barrelling down the hill at full taps causing marshalls and paramedics to scatter everywhere. He still has the audacity to swear at them. Why is this happening. We are slitting our own throats. We are making ourselves dirt in the eyes of the public and motorists. We are slowly killing our own sport with this disgusting attitude.

it's a classic case of the "me me me" attitude prevalent in SA. ZERO consideration shown but 100% consideration expected in return. my view is that if we clean up our own act hten we have a right to complain.

on my motorbikes: i will NOT put after market pipes on my motorbikes to make them noisier,  i will NOT ride without my number plates on, i will NOT wheelie or speed faster than in my car (in fact only slower than in my car) if i'm on a public road and there are any other road users (and i include animals etc) anywhere around.

on my bicycles: i will not jump red lights and i will not ride 2 or more abreast if i'm on a public road and there are any other road users anywhere around.

i've just recently been flamed onthe TB site for stating my view that speeding is reckless when you cannot see far ahead and there are any other road users around. i was accused of "just because you can't handle it..." blah blah and they all missed the point that it's not whether the rider can handle the speed - it's whether the rider can handle the stupid actions of other road users who don't look properly and as such "don't see" - speed increases this probability and reduces the time and space you have to react. as such i will not do brekkies runs with riders like that

so now i will sommer get flamed here - if cyclists want to ride like #$%^&nuts they must do so on their own - away from me. they must also accept responsibility for the lives of other cyclists on whom the now-irate cagers take out their frustrations. karma is a bee-atch and WILL get you in the end.

if you want to be treated like a road USER stop behaving like a road ABUSER.
