what are your thoughts regarding crank length on a MTB bike?

i am buying a new bike.

inseam is 80cm, and i'm 170cm tall.

the 2 bikes on the floor are kitted with 170mm and 175mm

now i am tempted to go for the 170mm but need some wisdom from fellow hubbers!

Thoughts, opinions?

You should be riding a 165mm crank according to online crank length calculators. So definitely go for 170mm.

doesn't really matter.

170mm will help you product cadence so for a road bike that will be ok. The 175mm will help you produce more torque which helps for MTB.

My inseeam is 81.5 and overall 171 and I ride 172.5 on the road and 175 on the MTB

IMO,

during MTB riding, we deal with many situations of low speed - high torque, and generally lower cadence than on a road bike, so

175mm

Disagree, 170mm gives better obstacle (read, rock) clearance and is better suited to a shorter leg length. Shorter crank is easier to accelerate from a standstill.

Greater torque, but slower acceleration. The reason track sprinters ride short (165mm) cranks.

Because they ride cadence up to almost 200rpm.

Not so much on a MTB

170, better for MTB, in my opinion. Especially if you're short.

Hell, I'm short and ride 170's on road, MTB and track, so I suppose I'm biased

Better clearance yes, BUT

Longer lever (175mm) = greater torque for low speed high torque situations

You can always gear down if required. 170 all the way. The OP will thank us later.
