It is easy for your capetonians to say cancel the tour. I've already spend over R 10 000.00 on accommodation and airplane tickets, bike transport.

I understand that this is a major catastrophy, but cancelling the tour MUST be the last option. I will settle for a different/ shortened route, but not just sommer cancel it out of sympathy.

don't get me wrong, I really feel for the residents and fire-fighters and have already donate money to the special CTCT trust for this, but I want to ride.

However, if the race has to be cancelled as a last resort I would understand. Its one of those things I guess. I would also agree that our entry fees be donated to the fire- fighters and people affected by this.

But again, it should be cancelled as a last option. not out of sympathy.

That bird sanctuary in the Houtbay area, is that okay/safe?

Its safe. The fires are in the mountains on the Constantia/Tokai/Noordhoek side, while the World of Birds is in the valley. There are no fires on Klein Leeukop, Mount Rhodes or the Hout Bay side of Table Mountain at this time.

The argument could be made that the Ride should continue in recognition of the hard work and sacrifice made by so many. Each rider that wishes to do so can display a symbol of thanks to the firefighters and volunteers and sympathy with those who have lost possessions in the fires. Catastrophy can bring communities together.

No reason to cancel the CTCT.

Reroute, alternative course, new bold adventure.

We can roll in the spirit of the fallen trees, fallen animals and the fallen homes.

In fact, I might roll with greater passion and courage than a normal windy CTCT.

I agree and think this is a much more positive and uniting way of looking at it.

CTCT should have Red Yellow Armbands in support of firefighters for sale at registration. Lots of people will donate!

Would travel insurance would cover the costs incurred if the tour is cancelled?

Like all insurance it depends on the fine print. When I was checking my insurance for a recent trip overseas, it was clearly a "top-up" option to cover for cancellation due to natural disasters, e.g. tsunami, volcanic ash, and I guess bush fires.

I agree.

Can also be used to see the damage first hand .... and to see where one can assist ...

My 12 year old will be doing his first tour ... and i will use the oppotunity to educate him about fires.. the dangers the effects ... and he will see the effect first hand ...

best education ever is to see or experience something ....

My heart goes out to all those who lost homes, evacuated .. or on the brink of evacuation or losing everything they have ....

Also to all the brave peopel fighting the fire ... with or without any compensation .... some even taking time off work do help ...... and to all that is supporting them  ... hats off to all of you.

Donation will be made to the fund .....

Me and my son start in 6D, just a few minutes behind you.

At this point we can expect a shortened route.  I think most of the cyclists will now not really race the ride, but tackle it as a fun ride, and to do it in support of rescue and fire fighting will be a good idea.

We can always race it next year again.

As a first timer on the CTCT , it would be sad if they cancelled the event as I am really looking forward to it, and I'm sure there are many with the same sentiment.

However cancelation as a last resort would be understandable , and donating the entry money to help with relief would be a great gesture. But I would also like to see that the organiser in that situation then give the current entrants a discount on their next entry perhaps?

However lets hope for the best  , and maybe we might have a fun/not so fun day out on our cycles!
