Seems the view of some are that we should roll over and let the thugs walk right over us - "you want my bike sir, please take it, oh wait, you forgot my cell, take it as well..." so, you think we should not defend ourselves, our wifes, our kids? Let crime pay? To me thats just "slapgat" . Please contribute constructively dont troll.

I was in a robbery in 2009 and I defended myself and shot 3 out of the 4 robbers....but have to live with those demons for the rest of my life.My son saw it happen through the lounge window. He is almost 9 now and still

wakes up screaming at night from the nightmares and still does want me to go out on my own.

It's easy to carry a gun and say what you will do but you have to live with those actions. There are very few people that will stand by you after you pull that trigger.

Superbly REAL post

Not Clint Eastwood-like hype.

Oh, I forgot - You also appear to be a troll.

Apologies to the OP and others trying to have a constructive discussion.

To the OP, while not ideal for general use, I'd advise a chest rig holding the gun in a vertical position that allows for ambidextrous access or across for strong hand access. You won't find one on the rack (not in ZA anyway), you will need to have it made. No zipper pouches, just a decent retention holster. Go with broad straps of a washable material. picture a 1-cup bra with a gun in it. Wear a thin/mesh breathable cycling vest, then the rig and then a full front zip shirt. make sure the front zip has a good size pull tab on it and is a solid zip, not some flimsy thing that jams.

As for the gun, go with what you have, if it has a firing pin block and a solid reputation. It's better than nothing.

If you feel your firearm is unsuitable, go with a glock or S&W or similar polymer hi-capacity in 9mm with good hollow points.

You are knowledgeable enough of the law, but, I'd suggest you get involved in either IPSC or IDPA. They will help ensure you have the gun handling & marksmanship skills to use the tools to the maximum benefit of your capability level, while limiting the risk to you and all around, if the need ever arises. You'll be amazed at what can be done in 5 seconds from a concealed draw by a practiced shooter.

As for tactics, take time to visualise & understand possible threat scenarios and think / plan accordingly. Also be very aware that uninvolved bystanders my not be so uninvolved. If threatened, avoid tunnel vision on the threat, take in the full threat potential and choose your actions.

Winning a fight by 100 meters is still winning!

NOTE: If you fall badly, it will break your ribs, but so will falling badly.

Ensure the rig can't fly up and smack you in the teeth, it hurts only a lot & the results are ugly!

I carry a snub nose 38 special in the small of my back. You cannot see it,it is so small. I bothered going the long route of keeping my licence so I am legal. I have in my mind of when attacked to roll way and come up armed. If they are armed with guns, i will not engage as i am not a cowboy. If they have pangas, poles or knives...then it is going to be good night nurse! I can not afford to lose the gun as this will used on other cyclists and myself. So only when you have the gap to pull the weapon do you make it known you have one..and when u do...use it..otherwise I would not play robocop.

If they dont stand by you they are not worth having as friends.

And if you had not defended yourself the concequences could of been much worse

From a personal point i feel that guns don't belong on a bicycle.

*It's hard to carry it concealed and to draw it in under a few seconds...you need to draw load and fire in under 2.5 seconds to stand a chance.

*Cyclist fall and often hard.Who will find the firearm when you lying on the ground.

*Very very few cyclist carry a firearm but all will get targeted just to try and steal a gun.Cyclists are easy targets.

*I know a few hubbers that are ex special forces or specialist police units and they won't carry on a bicycle.

The whole carry not carry is a personal thing.

Much like the make of car you drive and the bike you ride.

Is there a correct or incorrect answer to this debate ?

Personal situations will determine wether you carry or not.

All I say is if you carry be careful out there, and if you are going to pull it make sure you know what you are doing
