Now that I do have you attention...even if it was to tell me "Brakes" and not breakes!!

tell me this - other than buying a new set of resin pads....what the heck else can I do to try and kill the squealing banshee that is my rear brake...

I did not contaminate or spill any substance on it...I'm meticilous in not touching (with bare hands even) my rotors ..ever! Just cleaning the usual way with Prepsol and afterwards a wipe with a Acetone lappie..

I've since (1) re-cleaned numerous times (2) re-cleaned with ACETONE A FEW TIMES (3) SANDED THE PADS DOWN x2 (4) sanded the rotor down with emery paper (5) set on fire after soaking in pertol...nadda - this did not help either (6) acetone clean again....

but still no resolve...withtin a two pulls of the lever = screaming banshee!! The pads do seem to have glased over

What have I missed???

Shimano SLX brake system (not that that matters)

I had the same issue on my front brake after replacing the pads, eventually figured out that the pad was not correctly lined up with the rotor (see basic pic for reference), basically just under a millimeter closer to the centre of the rotor than what it should be, causing a lip on the outside of the rotor and also running over the (not sure of the correct terminology) splines/fins that head to where the disc is attached to the hub. Two really thin spacers to move the brake away ever so slightly away to line it all up (see second pic) and absolutely no noise.

Great advice!1 i'll have a look and come back...

I'm also starting to think the "source" of noise might NOT be the pads themselves 9especially after my\] rigourous cleaning procedures) - so these new "clues" are handy...copperslip will not contaminate the pads??

Avid 160 ...I swithed brake system but not rotors (yet)...front one is a quiet and sharp as they come!!

change rear rotor to 180 !

i have the same problem going to them retested and aligned and change rotor size !

Eish and I was going to say go for Avid G3 rotors...160mm. So much for that. Look the only other thing that I can think of is that maybe the pads did get contaminated when the lines were cut(unless you did it yourself). Since its only the back, why not ride until its fubar with the noise and then replace both pads and rotor with ICE tech's.

Have done this on the back with no bad results..

I have a similar issue with my back brake, which doesn't only squeel but also shudders and there seem to be a bit of a grinding noise going on.

Granted, they are new pads and I did the whole "riding in of the brakes" but still it sounds like dooms day when i hit the back brake.

Be very careful to smear a very THIN layer on the back of the pad and dont get any on the sides or face of the pad. Quite difficult to fit without getting the copaslip on your fingers...and then on the disc so be careful with this step too.

I have always found that proper alignment works best:

1) pads at correct radius from centre of wheel as shown above

2) calipers correctly centred on either side of the disc

3) calipers+pads parallel to direction of disc rotation

4) calipers + pads parallel to disc radius

5) discs worn evenly (faces parallel) without excessive scoring

As a test you could try to use the pads from the front and see if the noise persists.

I had the same problem and I needed to sand the rotor with fine paper until it was nice and dull. This allowed the the pads and rotor to bed togother better. I did some nice hard braking at this stage and the noise hasn't returned.

Eventually, I had to buy a new set of pads....NOTHING else worked! they were FUBAR!!

So i sanded the rotors till dull...and bedded new set of pads in...

PERFECT!!!  GOOD as the day i bought my bike...

still dunno where that oil/contamination had come from...

My Pads also never squealed until a very muddy race , now they don't bite as well as before and when they do they squeal. so I'm thinking that the sanding thing will work. Sand the rotors and de- glaze the pads.

a thin layer forms on the pads that gets hard ,
