How to get bigger calves

Hi these are my moo's moo's. Never had to gym to bulk them up, they're naturally like this. What I do to bug the body builders is do reps with a 5kg plate.

With kuitjies like that the shoes could even be pink......a Mawashi-Geri against the knocker with that leg!........trip switch off.......nighty-night.

you guys only shave your legs to make your calves look bigger .... except gummi ... he grows his leg hair to hide his calves from scaring children

 

I only shaved mine for my 50th birthday, hopefully my "Campagnolo leg warmers" will grow back suffciently before the approaching winter

Im no sports scientist, but have heard that for any kind of endurance sport big calves have a massive areobic / metabolic cost and are the last thing you want.  Big calf muscles are essentially just dead weight that suck up energy / oxygen for little return (from an endurance perspective - track sprints are a different story...).

 

How many Kenyan marathon runners do you see with big calfs?  The main reason they are the best endurance runners is because they (due to genetics) have comparatively little muscle mass in their calfs, which allows them to sustain higher intensity runs for longer and at a lower metabilic cost than their caucasian brothers with rugby balls on the back of their lower legs.

 

Instead of working out your calfs 2-3x a week, hop on a bike and do an interval session instead.  It will do far more for your bike riding and probably give you nice defined calfs in any event, without the bulk that will only slow you down.  Your group won't mock your calves next time you burn them up the last hill...

I concur with the small calf theory...i never do calf specific exercises other than what happens while running / cycling. Over the last few years I've changed my cleat position quite radically and have noticed that my calves seem to work / develop less and my hamstring / glutes are working more.

Nick Bester and Dimitri Grishin throw that theory right out of the water and then there was also Rockley Montgomery.

Then on the cycling side the likes of Ullrich and Cancellara to name a few do the same.

Look at the Caveman, a ball of muscle.

 

Once you have lean muscle mass, the power to weight ratio is all that matters.

Also one thing  people forget is how much fast twitch fibers did your mamma and papa give you ?

 

So for shorter events I can see a more slightly built athlete do better, have a look at the Kenyan's 21 km. and 42 km. runners versus your Comrades and City to City .

Let's not confuse endurance with sprint.

You have probably never seen Caveman's calves have you ?

Do you know who Caveman is ?

 

But your point is valid, no amount of calve work in the gym will turn you in to a speed demon.

Genetics on the other hand does, regardless of your size.
