I got a 1cm sidewall cut last year in the race. Sidewall is important.

Renegade controls magic psi is, 26 psi on the rear and 24 on front for grip and speed.

I ride the renegade control on raceday, their sidewalls are much better, rode a mini attakwas on the past weekend and had no problems

Have done K2C with Specialized Renegade before and worked well, but since ive moved to Maxxis Icons i must say it does perform well in most conditions i have put it through. So Icons for me!

Go with the tyres you have on your bike. Bit of loose rock and pebles in the first 6km. Then dirt road

I agree with this. Sidewall cuts can't always be blamed on your tire choice. Other variables such as pressure come into the equation. There are some Knarly uphills and fast downhills and you want to be as light and quick as you can. ( Racing Ralphs worked for me twice! ) Rocket Rons as quick and light.

I am contemplating changing out my 29" Maxxis Crossmark for Geax Mezcals tyres for this event, but I am not sure if it would provide much benefit in terms of speed/rolling resistance/weight. 

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Well, they both offer next to no grip on anything but hardpack, so I wouldn't recommend them for anything apart from gravel grinding.

I don't think it's worth the effort of changing. I've done the race a couple of times using crossmarks and they are perfect for the road surfaces.
