Hi Guys

I struggle with lactic acid build up around the top parts of my knees. Any tips on how to lighten it or help to not get it. I am doing the Ride the Rhino end of the month and this is my biggest issue.

I know its a lot about recovery and I struggle with it and I don't want it to spoil my stage race

Interval training

This....there aint no pill you can take I am afraid.

Teach your body to deal with it...the only way to do this is to go to sufferland. Send a postcard when you there

Hahaha.....you are a joker! BUT you're right, learn to love the burn. BTW it is lactate and not lactic acid. Just saying.

plenty of painstop pills lol :)

train and push through the burn .... this is my nemesis as well suffer from it as well.

it may be a psychological trick , but those usn cramp blocker tablets seemed to have cured me from this occasionally on longer rides

ps there is a definate difference between muscle versus ligament/joint pain , im talking about muscle burn ..

Cycling = pain. we just have to live it and ride through it

Don't agree. If it hurts, slow down. If I'm unfit and push too much, I get symptoms that point to patellar compression syndrome. Consistent riding that builds up strength = ability to ride long without pain. Also helps if I don't climb on the bike and start pushing straight away with cold muscles: warm up first.

Not too sure about lactic acid though, but definitely a +1 on the stretching.

Would RICE help with lactic acid after rides?

RICE will help improve the muscle damage, which is what is causing the post-ride/run pain. Not lactic acid. Lactic acid is an alternative fuel source for muscles to make energy to work, not what causes the burn. Micro-tears in the muscle is what causes the burn and subsequent pain, followed by healing to make them bigger and stronger.

It is neither lactic acid nor micro tears that causes the burning sensation in fatiguing muscles. The burn is caused by Hydrogen ions which is a byproduct of the glycolysis process in which carbohydrates are transformed to ATP. The harder you go the faster the buildup of Hydrogen ions and the sooner the burn.

By training in that zone often enough, your body will adapt to sustain high levels of training for longer before the burning starts. The body becomes adept at buffering the excess H ions, leading to faster recovery.

Short high intensity interval training will lead to the best results. Typically 20 s on 20 s off repeated 4 to 8 times with a recovery of 4 minutes between sets.
