Why should the buyer carry all the risk.

Looking at the number of complaints, I was just wondering why the buyer should take all the risk. I have now on 2 occasions burnt my fingers by buying goods and having it couriered to me. So my idea is: If i cannot go and view the goods and it must be couriered to me, then I only want to pay 50% of the asking price..until I have received the goods and inspected the condition. Then pay the balance. I think that it would discourage anyone trying to get rid of their problems without declaring the faulty goods..what do you think?

Ummm. It's open to interpretation. How does the seller know you're not just taking the mickey. I've not sold on the hub and only purchased once. It went swimmingly.

True...but he has my physical address where he is shipping the goods to..how do I know that the goods are in the condition as staded.

I pay half when I know it is on the way to me and the other half then the item is in my hands.

I like that...that way, the seller knows that if he sends me goods that are not as advertised I will not pay him the balance..

Perhaps you should only buy goods you can drive to and see and not consider items that have to be posted or couriered... Might save you some headaches

That would be nice, but sometimes you see something that doesnt come up for sale too often..and the price is right..

Is why you take the risk... Good luck trying to negotiate a 50% scenario... You will more than likely fail in the negotiations to purchase. As many sellers say, myself included cash is king... And there will be others who will pay.

Your first recourse with a purchase if you are not happy is to discuss with the seller and try and resolve the issue first.

There is also the rating system to rate both buyer and seller... So if you cannot sort out any issues then you negative rate if you feel the goods bought are not as specified and there was no amicable solution

There are inherent risks when buying something you cannot check first. We all know this. Usually this risk is accepted because of a good price.

If you don't want the risk then accept that you should only buy from those around your area.

If you want a wider seller range then there will be risks.

Saying you want the complete seller audience at low prices with no risk is a bit unrealistic.

There can be no rule to govern this and I suggest you handle it on a sale by sale basis. If the seller is ok with some stranger getting his hands on something where he has only received half the money, then well done. But it's only a matter of time before threads will pop up on sellers getting taken for a ride.

Or you can just throw a Rouxtjie, but then you offset range for risk mitigation again....

This really is a have cake and eat it situation.

If it was a real problem, you'd have seen third party escrow outfits like paypal to fill the gap. I think 99% of sales go well so there's no demand for higher security beyond common sense

people really send to you with no cash being handed over?

I've asked a 3rd party (HubSA dude that I had confidence in) to go check out the carbon goodies for me that I bought in Pretoria.

It worked out well.

I encourage others to do the same.

I totally get what you are saying..but consider me as a seller having to pay for goods..then only to receive the goods, with countless problems. I have to trust you as a seller by paying cash into your account. Its just a bit of a tricky situation, because I have bought items from guys that were exactly as stated. And I always take the time to go and rate them as a buyer or a seller.

I both buy and sell so know both sides... If you have concerns about taking risk and buying used components... Then go buy new from your lbs and save the worry!

As others have said, you seem to want your cake and eat it... There are probably 100s of sales done weekly on the hub of which 99% are satisfactory!

You are wasting your time trying to negotiate your scenario. If you feel the deal is dodgy then walk away from it... Else as Dale said get a mate to look at the item if they are local and you are not. Alternatively ask if the item can be taken to an lbs and checked then phone the lbs to discuss the item.

This is a great idea ...we should try and get some hubbers in the industry ...like bike shops ..they can vet the goods and dispatch at a fee of course .... :)
