This is a well worn topic ..

Indeed, from the Roman LAw we have the maxim, Caveat Emptor.

Nothing has changed in 2400 years.....

Am in the process of buying a frame,2 or 3 options I am lokking at,but none in my province. Have asked for high def pics so I can hopefully get a better idea of the condition or see clearer the marks that the seller has discussed with me.

I couldn't see myself asking the seller (and wouldn't expect it) if I can pay him half before delivery and the balance upon my inspection of the frame. As we all have different ideas of excellent condition.

I will try minimize the risk, but if I go ahead with the deal I understand the chance I am taking and except what it is.

It's definitely a risk to buy something based on someone's word hey

Most sellers sugar coated that 'almost new' or 'just 500 kms and 3 races' kinda wheels, etc.

Rather go have a look or send someone from this community that you feel can represent your interests.

This is a nation-wide bunch of folk.

I like that...that way, the seller knows that if he sends me goods that are not as advertised I will not pay him the balance..

Im assuming at that point it would be sent back and the seller would refund you or you would then negotiate based on price?

Personally when Im selling I wont do the 50% thing, it opens you up to too many risks as a seller.

I would rather then sell to someone locally or someone that will take your word on it. Again this can all be resolved with trader ratings, like most other things in the classifieds.

All I can say is that it is a shame that we should even have this discussion.. So unfortunate that people dont have the integrity or decency to tell you that the item that you are about to purchase is not as advertised.

I have had 2 really bad deals, things that you wont notice on pictures. In both instances I have so far lost money. And all the buyer says is, I am sorry I was not aware of these problems or damage.

Another thought..i have now bought something and paid up front. When I receive the item and notice that it is damaged or not as specified and decide to return the item..how will payment work?

Will I now be paid and then I ship the item back, or do I now trust the person that possibly deliberately sold me damaged goods. Send back the goods and hope for my money that has probably been spent already, because shipping normally takes a few days..

Yes either sent back or re negotiate the price..I feel that the seller should then cover all postage.

Also guys, I am not talking about a little scratch or something small. I am talking about serious problems, something that will cost you money or affect the safety of the item purchased.

Its not always as serious as sn integrity or decency issue, humans are actually mostly good people.

Most often though we have different expectations and perceptions, this then escalates when we are disappointed.

Manage this by getting photos and agreement on condition before the time.

IT guys here will know how important it is to get agreed Software specs signed before you start building something, for these exact "expectation vs reality" issue.

As a seller, I would not accept 50% up front and 50% on delivery, way too risky.

What happens if the item was perfect when the seller packaged it and then damaged during shipping?  The buyer gets the item says its damaged and won't pay the seller the remaining 50%.

I've said it before, this is a perfect place for any bike shop/ thehubsa to step in. Buyer pays bikeshop that inspects the items, bikeshop clears it and ships to end user, takes a percentage but buyer knows he's getting a good deal. Once it gets to him, bikeshop pays out seller.

Obviously don't use a dodgy place like that bike shop in the cape where the stolen bikes go.. Perhaps a large chain like CycleLab is ideally suited for this, given that they probably have a contracted courier already and have several stores.

Give the buyer the option of doing it this way or accepting voetstoots for a lower price.

That's way too complicated. It will also take a while to organise. Who transports the goods to the bike shop? How long does it take to inspect and report? IMO buyers who are overly risk averse should buy local and forget about hub specials.

As a seller, the first person who puts cash in my hand or account gets the goods. There's no way I would turn away a cash buyer who is standing in front of me, while a nervous out of towner tries to organise bike shop inspections etc.

Then after all that, I must still wait for the bike shop to pay me. I don't think so

Hence me saying a chain like CycleLab is ideal. They can offer various options for different pricing options with different SLA's attached. They probably already move goods between stores, these items can then just hitch a ride.
