The route for the 2015 Giro d’Italia has been unveiled at a glitzy ceremony in Milan and features seven summit finishes and a 59.2km time trial.

The action will get under way with a 17.6km team time trial in San Remo on Friday 9 May and end with a sprint-friendly finale in the centre of Milan on Sunday 31 May.

There will be two mountain-top finishes in the first week, two in the second week, and then three more in a demanding final week in the Alps.

An RCS Sport statement said: “The philosophy behind the race route is balance, in line with recent years, with fewer transfers and an approach geared up for modern cycling.”

The 2015 race will contain five high-mountain stages and seven medium-mountain stages, with the most demanding of the seven summit finishes coming at Campitello Matese on stage eight, Madonna di Campiglio on stage 15, Cervinia on stage 19 and Sestriere on stage 20.

However, at almost 60km, it is the rolling individual time trial on stage 14 that could have the biggest say on the outcome of the race. Although the Giro won’t be won here, it will give the general classification a considerable shake-up and eliminate from contention any rider who is weak against the clock.

The Cima Coppi - or highest climb of the race – will be the Colle della Finestre on stage 20, while arguably the toughest ascent will be the legendary Passo del Mortirolo, which is the penultimate climb of stage 16.

The race will start in north-western Italy before looping south and then back up for the final weeks in the Alps.

Well, time to turn my attention to the 2015 Giro. I am not really a big fan of the  Ardennes classics and 09 May is just around the corner.

I haven't really been following who is expected to ride and who isnt but with 7 mountain top finishes and the usual punishing climbs I cant see anyone but a known climber winning here, and with an on form Quintana, I think 'Berto is going to have his work cut out for him if he hopes to do the double this year.

Awesome thread resuscitation there , GOG

It'll be a splendid contest between

Porte

Aru

The veteran 'Berto

Who else is chasing the GC win?

Quintana won't be there to defend as he is set to wear yellow into Paris on 25th July ????

Oh, okay, strange that he doesn't feel the urge to defend his title?

I am not a Porte fan but Aru is a good competitor, what about Nibali? Is he talking about riding?

Well theres always Scarponi......  ^_^

Quintana has a good stands to win yellow as there's only a 15 km ITT at TdF

The so-called big 4 in Froome, Nibs, Berto and Quintana is all prioritizing TdF except for Berto who is aiming for a double

Oh, I'm sure Uran will also be there contesting for the Maglia Rosa

I'm watching that French youngster from Giant closely

Hope he'll be there to chase pink.

What's his name again?

I'm hoping for Contador. I say that from experience. I always plan to support someone else but the moment the race gets going my I just find myself hoping for him. So this time im playing honest with myself.

I just love to see him ride.

Thank goodness my new trainer is small and mobile and can easily be set up in front of the TV.

I will be loitering around this thread and getting insights again. I cannot contribute much though. If I may ask a favour: I don't recognise most of the riders in the pictures. Please add names especially when they are in civvies.

Go Berto!

Are you not thinking of Julian Arredondo? Also a good bet for a mountains jersey, might be a little inexperienced for overall though.

As its cold and sleeting I spent a few minutes and came up with my suggestions, as I am a big 'Berto fan (who would have guessed  :D ) I have him pinned for the win, but theres a few others who can possibly be a threat due to so many mountain top finishes, Rigoberto Uran is my choice for runner up, he is also a great professional and in my opinion just gets better every year, then we have Aru as a good competitor but what about Pozzovivo? maybe be a little compromised in the TT but he has shown some good form lately and he wont be that marked by the others, then I also have great respect for Rafal Majka, he will most likely find himself assisting 'Berto, but left to his own devices he has great climbing ability, then as my outside dark horse I am going to say Danny Martin, he has improved dramatically over the last two years and he is never scared to give it a tonk, plus I just like the guy!.
