I wonder if we can't find a way to use Strava for seedings.... just a thought...

There must be a way to use Strava. I wouldn't count it as the authority, unless JUMA does what Red Bull is doing for their Lionheart Trail running race in CT.

They have a short course that participants need to run and log on Strava in order to qualify. For JUMA purposes I wouldn't call it "qualifying" but posibly have a 5-10km short tech course that participants can Strava if they want to help their seedings. Like extra credit

Thats a smart idea, just as an extra.

I generally dont like doing races very often so having like a booster for seeding would be cool.

Idea of the day!!!! The technical riders will be able to get out the way of the faster riders easier than those that still belong on training wheels

Kind of like a virtual prologue event... maybe can be setup in Strava as a challenge of some sort and then can be done time independent - just need some careful selection of routes to make sure all the elements are covered - tech and endurance.

That's a really good idea and could quite possibly revolutionise the way all MTB events are seeded. Sure SAS counts for most but race specific "extra credit" relevant to the event to boost your starting position. Great idea!

It's a pleasure guys! My bank account details are as follows:

But yeah, after the short course is mapped out, have a window period in which participants can go try boost their seedings. Times will only be valid if recorded during that window period. So no times from 2yrs ago before corners and obstacles were added.

Furthermore the mapping of this segment/challenge will have to be quite careful as to prevent side-riders from featuring (those who ride next to tech segments and good strava times, intentional or not). The Spruit's segment leaderboards (especially the flowy lines with jumps) are riddled with the names of side-riders.

I think this is a good idea.  It does require some honesty.  I suppose I could easily download someone else's file to strava and qualify for batch A? ^_^

You might be able to.... BUT if that segment is good enough, the person who has ridden it has already uploaded it... (Strava is wise to this kind of S..t :) )

And you will be dropped badly in the first 2km... remember that in the Juma, the top 200 riders in the 52k are not as close as you think - take a look at the results... nearly 45 min spread over the top 200.

I was only joking, but what you say is so true.

Strava will give orgainsers a really good idea about a persons fitness and technical ability.  Alot can be learnt by seeing where, how often, how fast and how far, someone rides.  I really think that proper seedling not only adds to your enjoyment but to others too( because I'm not holding others up).  Plus it makes the race safer.

I might be a bit negative but I see a lot of people pitching up ungoverned racing and having temper flairs at slower folk trying the same. Hopefully this course will be set in a bike park where there can be some kind of governance.

Another Idea would be to have it at a bike park where the bike park can have a permanent timing station. Then you rent a tag and go do a few laps

I started in E batch this last Sunday.

by the bottom of Melville koppies I cought up to a lady who I honestly have no idea how she got into C or D group.

she could ride but was not technically gifted and was not a very "fit" rider either.

Im guessing she got a friends entry who had a good seeding.

There were however 2 ladies who dropped my slow ass up a climb in Houghton.

I think that the organizers should dumb the event down completely for next year. In fact they should maybe remove all the obstacles, and then grade a dirt road up the spruit. Maybe then the masses will be happy.

There I fixed it.

Could work. But that brings additional costs in for both the riders and the bike parks (I don't know of any that are equiped with timing chips etc.).

I think having it Strava based makes it more accessible to all. And as stated there need to be some guidlines:

  • Only to be used as a seeding boost. Not main method of seeding.
  • Only segments recorded between the 'qualifying window' will be considered
  • Segment needs to be designed in such a way to minimise short cutting and side-riding.

As for the tempers flaring thing... that happens on the Spruit every weekend, race or not

but I think the fact that it will be open for a specified period will reduce this as riders can simply go do it again if they get stuck behind a little-old lady. It won't be like a race where that is the only result you get.

I wouldn't laugh Google... you got dropped by 5 people!

*cough 6th overall*

But seriously, well done!
