"MTN-Qhubeka team founder Douglas Ryder said on Friday that Eritrean Natnael Berhane was upset at being called a "nigger" by Belarussian Branislau Samoilau as they raced alongside each other, but had rejected suggestions he be disqualified."

Sigh al jazeera got the story right but the tour wrong, this happened at the tour of Austria.

The Eritreans riding TDF are Danny T and Kudus.

I'm hoping Dan Martin can show up strongly

Final 5 kms today should eliminate the roleurs, test the climbers' zip and suit best the puncheurs l like Kwia', Stybar, Martin, Valverde and Super Sagaaaan:

Chris Hoy says Cav is not a real sprinter. He says he is an endurance athlete with a very fast finish.

Figures I saw for Cavendish he peaks around 1400w but can hold 800 w for over 500m. Not sure if that's accurate. Hoy measured 2300w

None of the TDF guys are 'real' sprinters. Would be a bit like seeing Usain Bolt doing the London Marathon.

***Superfan Alert***

For those that ride or drive the Tour de France route every year, there is a familiar face. It is a face that is easily overlooked by newcomers, because he wears no outlandish costume, and does not jump or yell. Instead Lucien Blyau, waits for the Tour riders midway though each stage and hands small cans of Coca-Cola to any takers.

“I gave out 20 yesterday,” he says with his quiet smile. But while Lucien makes no attempt to attract attention, he is quite recognizable for those in the know. For years now, his camping car carries the banner, “Crie! Qui? Le Lion,” a play on words to his friend, former Belgian champion Claude Criquielion, who died tragically this year at the age of 58.

“I started coming to the Tour de France in 1975,” says Lucien. “I came to see Eddy Merckx win. But instead I witnessed his defeat. But I keep coming back every year. Next month I turn 90!”

The terrain today might look straightforward – apart from the third-category climb at the finish, there’s only one other categorised climb, mid-stage. But the road will be constantly dipping and rising, especially in the second half. The stage comes at the end of a very hard opening phase of the Tour.

The stage is 181.5km in length but the final climb is crucial. The race visited the Mur de Bretagne in 2011, although with a slightly different approach to the ascent. That day Cadel Evans came out on top - just - ahead of Alberto Contador.

The stage is likely to come down to the painful slow-motion sprint up the final two kilometre climb above the town of Mûr-de-Bretagne. It’s a difficult climb to judge – not quite as steep as the Mur de Huy in stage three, but longer. It’s also dead straight for the first kilometre and a half, which makes it psychologically harder – riders on the limit often break climbs down to smaller targets, like the next bend, but that’s not possible here.

This is a big day for the Pro Conti team Bretagne-Seche Environnement, as they move into their home territory. We certainly expect to see them in the break group today!
