Can't get tyres on ZTR Crests

I needed to replace the cheap stock wheels on my bike so I got a nice set of ZTR Crests here from a fellow hubber. Thing is, I broke all my tyre levers trying to get some tyres on. I tried Kenda small block 8s and Racing Ralphs - no go.

Now I know these rims are intended for tubeless use but I eventually you are going to be out there in the middle of nowhere needing to fit a tube to get home. If I can't even do it at home then there is no hope for these rims.

So now I am leaning towards having my wheels rebuilt, taking the hope hubs from the ZTR Crests and putting them in my Giant CR70 Double Wall rims.

Is that a good idea? Will I be able to sell the ZTR Crest Rims on their own?

No no no...leave the crests

The trick is to move the bead of tyre to the centre of the rim once the one side is one, that will give you the cm or so to get the other side on.

To be honest I have absolutely no intention on going tubeless but if I do I am sure the Giant CR70s will work just as well.

Even if I do go tubeless there are some cases where you will be out on a ride and needing to fit a tube and with the Crests that seems impossible.

I think your technique needs a bit of work, you should be able to get them on by hand. Use a bit of dish washer wiped along the bead, and as Rox says, the bead should sit in the recessed groove whilst you are pushing it over elsewhere.

No No No, ZTR Crests are just about as good as a rim can get, far superior to the Giant wheelsets.

Because of its unique profile it is sometimes not compatible with a few tyres, especially GEAX.

I have done 1000's of KM on crests without any issue. They are so good that I could seat a Maxxis Icon Tyre by hand pump.

My biggest question is why you don't want to go tubeless??   Since I have started riding 4 years ago incl 2 Epics and numerous other stage races I have only ever needed to fit a tube once (sidewall cut) and only had to plug a puncture twice. I cannot think of any good reason to still ride tubes.

Why no love for tubeless....there will be zero worry about tube fitting cause you wont get punctures...so problem solved. Those giant's are also boat anchors so moving back isn't that smart imo

If you need to fit a tube with tubeless it will be because of a sidewall cut, and a long one at it. So you will also need a gatorpatch cause the tube will just stick out when inflated. This has happened once in 4 years for me on my crests...was a quick fix on the trail(10 min if) and I was rolling again.

Cant comment on Crests and fittment of tires. I have a set of Arch EX and I fit tubeless tires easy enough. I also said why tubeless its a waste of cash and after trying to go ghetto tubeless and failing i left it. However when i bought the Arch EX's they were already setup tubeless. They work like a dream and i will be able to change a tire in the field if required but does become tricky. The tubeless has saved me from many flats tho.

I actually Googled for "ztr crest can't fit tyre" and seems I am not the only one. I have fit many types of tyres on many makes of rims for years now. This is the first time I struggle and give up.

All that makes me think it is much better for me, as someone that has little interest in going tubeless, to just rebuild using the Giant CR70s.

You are making a huge mistake, but it seems your mind is made up. I would convert my wheels to tubeless, and practise getting tyres on, but that it me

Know all too well what your going through.

Sat for an hour this weekend trying to get a WTB tyre on a crest rim.

Maxis seems to work very well, the first bead shouldn't be an issue, its the second one that is a bugger.

You tube fitting a tight tyre, there are some good tricks to be learnt.

Dude if you that adamant that you dont want the Crests you will be better off selling the entire wheelset, and buying something else. Removing the crests and then the cost of rebuilding the giant rims onto your hope to end up with a wheelset that will be worth bugger all, does not make sense from resale down the road perspective.

get yourself a set of these and you'll never have to worry about breaking a lever again

it is generally easier to get a tight tyre on when there are two people, one keeps the bead from slipping off on the one side, the other person slowly works the bead on from the other side.

If the above fails, go to your LBS, they'll be able to show you a few tricks of the trade.

Here is a question...do you guys soap the rim and bead before fitting, also as cpt says...do you use proper levers...ie green crowbars is the only way
