so about 6 months ago my sun ringle hub snapped in half.

so, wanting to ride that weekend i went on to evobikes and got a novatec replacement.

all was going well, it has lots of engagements which make it sound nice and expensive.

that was until about 3 weeks in when it started developing a little bit of play, so i emailed evobikes who told me that if i want it fixed i just need to send it back to them.

which is fair enough, and looking back, is what i should have done.

but i wanted to go riding that weekend

anyway, its six months down the line and now my hub makes a funny squeaking noise at low speed.

just found out why.

so, all in all, the service from evobikes is good, and they going to be hearing from me soonish (wanna ride this weekend) because the hub is still under warranty.

the quality of the hub however, very disappointing, or is it? the hub was only R1000 which isin't a lot at all for a hub.

moral of this story, you get what you pay for!

My BMW530d was making a funny noise a while back. I called BMW and they said bring it in, but I needed to go somewhere that weekend...

Oh no, now look at all the funny bits of metal lying underneath it...

Six months after your hub starts squeaking.....jus' sayin'

i made it very clear that i consciously didn't take it in.

the hub is 6 months old which means 6 months ago it was brand new

the squeak is about 3 weeks old, that means 4 weeks ago it wasnt there

those end pieces are designed to come out... but they dont fall out on other wheels whenever they arent held together by a bike as far as i know

that shiny bit you see on the end piece, thats cause it has been taking impacts and grinding on the hub body, not something its supposed to be doing, at least not like that.

since everyone seems to be having trouble understanding this, ill make it clear

6 months and its broken... now if it was a chain i would understand, but it isint.

yes i wash my bike, thanks for asking.

and before you ask, the bearings have been replaced, about a month and a half after the hub was NEW

really, i cant stress this enough, its 6 months old, it should still feel brand new, not needing new parts.

its like people who say that a car has a lot of milage after 100 000km.

No.

if your car starts breaking before say, 200 000km, you either drive the car hard (not necessarily fast, just badly, riding clutches and grinding gears and wheelspins come to mind) or your car is unreliable.

I've had Novatec hubs for 1 year now, never had any problems except replacing bearings after 10 months.

I'm 17 and I do intense XCO, Marathon racing and occasionally do some big downhill jumps all over SA

Maybe my hubs last cause I strip down my bike once a month and clean it out and replace grease and tighten bolts with a torque wrench, whenever I hear something wrong or squeaky I immediatly find out where it is coming from and fix it.

Everything has wear and tear and once in a while parts have a factory default, servicing a bike regurally insures that you know what is going on with your bike, have a relationship with your bike and know what or when "she" wants/needs something, this will insure fun, enjoyable rides ;)

3 months against manufacturers defect and thereafter it's wear and tear .

calm down copper: 1) he is not knocking Evobikes. 2) he is not knocking Evobikes, 3) he already copped to douchery not taking it in. He is just mega upset the thing failed so early. Its pretty obvious from all his posts.

Very calm. It appears it is broken because whoever replaced the bearings did a crap job. If you don't seat them 100% then you get the problems he is having. The fault is his and his alone. Not the hub.

Just now some religious grease worshipper will start advocating that the bearings needed to be greased .

The wear that your hub seems to have is from useage not underlying fault? How was the hub when they replaced the bearing, all good apart from the bearings? Some lbs fit the cheapest crappest Chinese bearing which can sometimes fail rather prematurely.

Went to the local Skf bearing shop and asked for a particular bearing and the guy said no use these Chinese cheapies and then named a high end/expensive lbs that the guy said used them for all their wheel bearing rebuilds...

That bearing has failed to the point the hub's end cap has been grinding away at the hub body. This damage did not happen in 3 minutes. That wheel must have been running helluva rough for a while and the disc also running out of true. The replacement bearing was likely dodgy but I like to think I would noticed the problem before so much damage was done.

Forgive my sarcasm. It just feels these days that some of the threads are a real piss take. Let's start from the beginning and maybe I can be more helpful...

Somehow you snapped a hub in half? Ok it was a sunringle, strange but we will give that one to you. You bought a new middle of the range novatec? Not sure who fitted it but that really isn't an issue at all.

You rode it and it started to make a noise? You took it to ...... and they fitted their or your own bearings to it? (I just need to step in here again and say that right there should void your warranty if you did not take it to the shop you bought it from).

Then a few months later it appears the job done fitting the new bearings has caused a few issues with the hub? Now you say the bike shop you bought the hub from will be hearing from you? This appears to be your story. I think that 99% of the people who read it will see the problem here.

If you buy something and it has a warranty you don't take it to their competitor for repairs and then try and blame the product. I hope this makes sense?

I also hope Evobikes reads this thread. But because I know how good they are they will probably have it fixed or replaced for you. Sure you had nothing but good words for them but you blamed their product as I think they import Novatec directly.

Could you maybe put a picture up of the snapped sunringle? Would be interesting to see.

Lastly if Evobikes did replace the bearings please accept my sincere apologies. It is going to take me a while to clean this egg off of my face.

Dude, I've seen 3 separate people snap axles on 3 different types of hubs. It's possible...

Snap a hub or snap an axle?

But then again that's not the main focus of his post

You (twice) hairy and one other person

But yes, axle. Not hub. But then Mada isn't a small guy either. Taller than us, but not as hefty.

Yes I've snapped an axle ONCE.

That's not that point either
