These devices are aimed at a different kind of user and garmin should be actually welcoming this. They should be targeting their brand as a premium and focus on core users that want the premium experience. Once people experience a Fitbit/ms device then upgrade to garmin. Only problem they have is they haven't updated their units in sometime and that's going to hurt them.

Garmin have released the 620, Fenix 2 and the 920xt is the last 15 months. Thats pretty updated if you ask me.

Agreed: this whole co-processor model is rubbish I'm not sure to what extent each device requires its associated mobile phone, but if the band works without the phone interms of the band's core functions, then i'm ok with it. Its quite ironic that both Polar and Garmin have competing band-like products. I won't be surprised if mobile phone makers start including more pro-performance related functionality into bands due to user demands and the always present need to expand market presence. Then the topic of this title could very well be prophetic as mobile phone makers encroach into the sports performance monitoring market. Garmin and Polar are practically already there: they just need to add mobile phone capabilities.
