2x10 to 1x10 Chainline issues

Hi guys

Went from a 2x10 to a 1x10 using an SLX crank and a Narrow/Wide chainring, but the chainline is not exactly ideal. Broke a chain literally 1km into a ride. Any ideas on how to fix this issue? Maybe some bolt spacers?

the chain line should not be any different to using the 2x10. I never used the smaller chain ring so the chain line was always on the larger chain ring.

what I did was to add a spacer to the chain ring to bring it as close to the best chain line possible.

What BB?

You can add spacers. BB dependable

I struggled with a bike that had a press fit bb. It worked but was as smooth as other when in highest gear on cassette

If you used the same chain on the narrow wide that you had on the 2x 10 the different forces will probably cause the chain to weaken .I suggest a new chain and let that settle into the new chaining

Not sure what BB it is, think a BB70? There are 2 BB spacers on the drive side and 1 on the non-drive. I talked to a bike mechanic and he said there is no way of shifting the BB for better chainline... chain was brand new and had a quick link installed, but it broke nowhere near the link.

What did you use as spacers?

I know this would seem like a doff question for some but, what is meant by a narrow / wide chainring? How does it differ from a normal chainring?

One tooth lesser thickness, the next one is thicker, repeat.

It is meant to retain the chain better and still allow the chain to run through the full range of cogs on the cassette. Would not be able to run as a dual or tripple chain ring as the teeth are not ramped and pinned like a conventional chainring and will not easily shift gears.

The teeth are narrow and wide alternatively so that you have less chance of the chain coming of .Thats why the XX1 sram chain is purposely made to accommodate the teeth .A normal shimano chain will work but not as well as the made for system by Sram

more importantly, you should be typing up the next part of your epic "Canoeist in the desert" and not trawling the Hub :P

I trying to become clever like you guys so that I can at least sound like a MTBiker ;) . Next week's trip to your part of the world should give me time for the next episode.

I couldnt possibly agree more. The last episode ended like a season finale of a tv series!
