110kg guy on ZTR Crests

Hi guys

I got a good deal on an almost brand new Silverback Sola1 http://www.silverbacklab.com/bike/mountain/silverback-sola-1/ (Paid R9000 with tubeless conversion done as well as pedals etc).

I'm however worried, because I saw that ZTR Crests are rated only up to an 86kg rider (and I'm slightly heavier than that at 105kg)

We don't ride the bikes very hard, and don't plan to (yet), but I don't like the feeling of not trusting the wheels completely.

What should I do?

Swop wheels from my bike, and those of the wife's (She's got a 2014 Sola 4, specs below)

She's had a tubeless conversion done with Maxxis Ikons

Her wheels: Sola 4 wheels and hubs

  • RIMS: Alex MD21, 32H, Stainless Steel eyelets, Polyurethane Rimtape, Black, Custom Sector Decals
  • HUBS: Rear: Shimano FH-RM35, Centre Lock Disc Mount, Adjustable cup and cone angular contact bearings, Cassette, Black Front: Shimano HB-M618, Centre Lock Disc Mount, Adjustable cup and cone angular contact bearings, 15mm Axle, Black
My wheels: Sola 1 wheels and hubs are:
  • RIMS: Stan’s Crest, 32H, Stan’s Yellow Rimtape, Black, Red Decals
  • HUBS: Rear: Shimano SLX, Centre Lock Disc Mount, Adjustable cup and cone angular contact bearings, Cassette, Black Front: Shimano SLX, Centre Lock Disc Mount, Adjustable cup and cone angular contact bearings, 15mm Axle, Black

Or should I sell my wheels and buy new ones?

Ideally I don't want to throw a card at the problem, but I do want best value for us..

A secondary problem is that she likes the look of her bike and would ideally not like to change her rims from black to my white ones.. But for that I'd maybe use that ad in the classifieds of vinyl stickers in custom colours..

Let me know what you okes think.

Rebuild your hubs and spokes (If possible) onto ArchEX rims.

Or sell yours outright and buy a custom built set of ArcEX rims on Hope hubs.

My brother in law knocks around your weight and had endless hassles with the stock Crest rims on his Silverback. He rides Arch EX rims on Hope hubs now and hasn't had a days hassle.

had a set of stock alexrims on my spark 29er, they didn't last long, I'm 100kg and ride kinda hard

many will mention how weak the crests are, and they aren't wrong, but if your wheels are well built and you don't ride hard I cant see an issue - I have ridden a bike with crests and it didn't break (didnt ride em for long though, so take this with a pinch of salt)

another suggestion would be to sell the crest rims (weight weenies seem to love em) and buy beefier rims

Can someone give me a ballpark how much this would cost me? (The two options?)

Sorry, I'm still very much a noob.

Also, if I decide to sell the wheels, how much should I look at asking?

I have a Sola 1 got it Dec 2013, and weigh in at around 106kg, and the crests have held out fine so far.

My rear wheel took a bad knock last week and needs to be trued, but its not bad at all.

I would suggest that you go tubeless so that you can run a lower pressure, that will help.

Ballpark, Rims ar R950 each, so that, spokes shouldn't need to change, then labour, let's say R500 or so max per wheel(no idea what it is, never had it done). Then deduct about R750 or so per rim that you should be able to flog them for

New wheels, Arch EX on Hopes about R6k, on Stans 3.3 rims about R5k. Ballparks, you should be able to sell your wheelset for between 3k and 4k depending.

I would not take a chance. all good and well on the flat but head down a hill and hit a lumpy looking root at speed and you could be face planting your way to hospital. Arch EX is a much better option

Rode Crests at 100kg without any trouble

Julle soek vir K@K ... there is a reason why the rims are weight rated, get the proper rims/wheelset for your weight.

OP, did the salesman advise you that the wheels were rated at a weight below what you are .... I would imagine that at 100+ you should look like a rider who is over the wheels limit from the outset, or are a "big boned" rider like me that looks about 10kg's less than what you really are?

I weigh 95kg and ride ArchEx Hope Hubs and double butted spokes(2/1.8/2mm). I find they are plenty stiff for me for XC although I wont trust them on a trail bike at my weight. IMHO if I were you, I would get a set of Flow EX. At 110kg you wont notice the small weight penalty of the Flow's and you will have a wheel that will last forever.

This is probably very good advice.

The last thing you need is to be heading down some rock garden and worrying if your wheels are going to hold up...

Don't skimp on wheels, get the right thing and do it once.

Make contact with a good wheel builder in your area and have him custom build the wheels to suit your needs.

Double butted spokes is a must, don't let anyone talk you around that.

Bought the bike second-hand (but actually new - I could see it wasn't ridden ever), so no dealer saw me :)

I think from the looks of it, I'd choose ZTR Flow rims if I had to go that route.
