Tough day out from FL after the Xmas break, had a mechanical with my bottle cage in that the bolt came loose and as the bottle fell out almost took me. .. And this only 20kms into the race... Had to stop to try and do something to stop the bottle cage rattling around and retrieved the lost bottle that had to carry in my shirt pocket... Other than that, the hills towards the end were a killer (more lack of time in the saddle)

Think was around the 3:40 so not too unhappy for the first race of the year and not much done since the 94.7... Good event!

Disappointed day for me... started BL and was up with the front break away up the first climb and through Krugersdorp. As we started the descent out of Krugersdorp my bike started to snake all over the road, luckily managed to come to a stop in the grass without falling.

Thought maybe a skewer was loose but everything tight and wheel running true so carry on, happens again at bottom of the hill. Take wheels out check them and put them back in and tighten the quick releases bit more... happened again first descent after that. Seemed every time I free wheeled at pace it was snaking and uncontrollable. Ended up somewhere with a mixed CL, DL, BL group. cruised home in 3:04 but really was looking forward to this one.

Did you change anything on your bike shortly before the race? What pressure where your tyres pumped?

didn't change a thing... even road it on Thursday with no problems.

I seem to have found the reason for it snaking but whats causing it I don't know...

I turned the bike upside down now when I got home and pedalled it really fast and then stopped to let the back wheel spin... at first everything is running true and then after about 20-30 seconds it slowly starts to wobble and gets worse and worse as it continues to spin...

This is exactly what happened today anytime I coasted on a downhill no matter how fast I was going it would start getting unstable after a while... as soon as I get to the bottom and start pedalling again it stops...

Any suggestions? never heard of something like this

Any bearing play on the hub? Maybe try temporary balancing your wheel and see if it goes away? I presume you were riding your carbon wheels?

I would also check bearings if I were you. Judging from your comments I'd say that's where your problem is.

After a puncture on Robert Broom drive at the 4 way stop which my mate fixed in about 3 minutes flat... (He really should be a TDF mech :) managed a 3h09 from DL. Pretty happy with that.

Must say full closure is a blessing though. Saw some hairy moments on the road today. Some very close calls.

Great event,

Also started in FL and the first climb was far better than I expected. Was also In a bunch and this really helped my time. Loved the tandem that was leading but moved forward as the some of the riders were getting to close.

Was my second road race and I will definitely enter a few more. Time was around 3:22 so I was very happy as I am a plus size rider. 100++

Only complaint was some of our fellow road users shouting insults for waiting a little longer at intersections.

Organization was great and I will be in for next year.

Some hard racing mixed with negative racing in the VA bunch and there were some serious contenders for the  "VA hide and seek champion".

There were two guys from Cycle Lab that not only sat-up everytime they got anywhere near the front, but they would roll through in a echelon and brake when they got near the front to prevent them having to do any work, What a laugh!

Anyhow, great race as always! Its a pity the 947 can't use some of these scenic roads.

We had one or two okes doing the same during the first 2/3 of the race in the second AL group. But can't really moan about it to much because Mr Hide n seek turned into a blue and green striped HULK for the last 30km.

What did irk me though was that elite riders start A batch and make good strong A batchers look like fools! Like FOOLS I say!

I understand that the open batches are exactly that; open. But it's a rather depressing feeling to see the top 10 A batch spots scamper away on the first climb of the day and you know that there is no way you can squeeze more training into your schedule to counter that at next year's race.

Was in the front of AL. No elite riders there. Check results....

Aah yeah! The inside of the hurt box. Now I remember it!

No incidents. Just inside last year's time. I saw one of the more impressive pulls up a hill (for us backmarkers) ever. Guy on a Look in Gauteng Dairies kit. Pulled a large group of AL on the rolling hill up to the three "towers" all by himself. Freaking impressive. Please tell me he is a hubber!

Now for tmrw at Serengeti. Eish.

Loved that oke.

Not scared to push a pedal.

See you at Serengeti
