Letum911 Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 I would go 39x15, prefer the higher cadence when it comes to the climbs. I haven't done the 94.7 but my preferred setup is 39x16 for the Jozi Hustle and all the other Jozi rides that go over the "flat hills" in Jhb
divernick Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Any ratio between 2,3:1 and 2,7:1 should be cool, depending on your strength and fitness. On a very flat race recently I used a 52x20 setup and it was perfect. With more hills like 947 I'd use 42x17.

On a very flat race recently I used a 52x20 setup and it was perfect. With more hills like 947 I'd use 42x17. that is what i thought as well. especially the new route because there is quite a bit more climbing involved. i managed 36.7km/h avg (42x16) a few weeks ago on 38km course (its fairly flat - arround airport and kempton then back to boksburg) , after the course i was flat...
Jewbacca Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 I have ridden Argus, EP Herald, Rotorua 100 miler and various other road race shenanigans around the world all between 48:16 and 52:16. It all depends on your training and power and whether you prefer a high/low cadence. I like to feel resistence in the pedals and not spin out. Flat courses like the Argus mean you need to punch the climbs and have extra on the flats to at least have a chance of drafting to keep up. Good luck. I think with most threads though this all comes down to trial and error and personal preference. There is no right or wrong answer and only you can make the call, no matter what 5 bazillion hubbers say
Cargyrl Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 My betterhalf will be doing it on a Simple Sam, standard gearing, lekker sukkel. At least I will be able to hang on and stay with the family. LOL!
Wedge Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 I used a 42x16I found it a bit short on the downhill sections, but the climbs came out out pretty sweet(barring the last 1km climb, jaysas)
