I am in the market to acquire a action camera for MTBing.

The problem is, there are quite a few on the market with different price points.

The pricing is not really a problem, but each offers different advantages and benefits.

The obvious ones come to mind.

GoPro Hero4 Silver

Great product (I think ).

Cost R5999 ish / 32 gig SD Card/R1000/Bike mount R500

Garmin Action cam

No idea what the cost is, but apparently has all sorts of speed/altitude, etc features the GoPro does not offer.

(I've heard)

Ninja Action cam

Comparable to the GoPro Hero3 except it has a screen. (distributor claim)

Cost R2000 (brilliant price comparative to GoPro Hero 3)

I am not going to do editing, make movies or posting the footage.

I just want footage for personal use/records of places I rode.

I know there are GoPro and/or Garmin fans and your opinion is welcome but,......... I am looking for advice from people that has experience with 2 or all of the above based on my need.

Thanx

Coming from someone who uses a Contour 2 action cam, and has mates with GoPros, id get a GoPro. Their mounting options are just so much better than anything else, and the aftermarket stuff is also there ito support and accessories.

Thanx Armpies, what brand is the Contour 2?

My wife is also in the market.

It appears she wants to throw a Gopro into my Christmas Stocking.

Hero 4 Black or Silver and why ?

Again, I am not planning to use an editing suite, but want ease of use and good quality to record my rides

I have used both a GoPro 3 (I think) and the Garmin Virb. I will without doubt buy the Garmin if I had to choose again. The integration of GPS and all the sensors into the footage is very cool. I set up two little dashes in the bottom corners of my edited video. Showing speed, cadence and power. The editing software is much the same in my opinion, except you can plug your Garmin Edge in and overlay the data if you have not paired the sensors to the Virb.

The Virb is also slightly easier to determine if it is recording or not. Both have got a one button press to start recording.

Battery life on the Virb is marginally better.

They use exactly the same mounts, meaning they both come with pretty crappy bicycle mounts and you might as well invest in after market immediately.

4 silver - I would say black but unless you are a pro, you have more usable features on the silver.

I bought the GoPro Hero4 Silver whilst overseas recently, main reason being the touchscreen on the back of the camera, makes it a whole lot easier to operate / set up. It comes with 3 different "back doors"

  • one with an open frame ( your finger can touch the screen / no protection from the elements)
  • one with a flimsy type frame ( you can operate the screen / dirt proof)
  • one with 100% protection frame (you can look but not touch the screen)

I generally use the 100% back door when riding but when my after market goodies arrive from China I will be using the other backdoors for more general use, i.e. the versatility suits me.

Just a word of caution, and I can only speak for GoPro, you need some serious computing power to edit and export your final product. I have had to dumb down my movies so much to post on utoob, that it kinda defeats the object of recording at such a high resolution. In hindsight I would of gone for the low spec one.
