Ok, so I had to go and check out that nasty fang of a climb. Turns out I had to plot it but it sure kicks, I took it from the river up and over and those last "S" bends probable average 25% so now you know why they were crawling.

I wouldn't put it past them to be walking. Maybe that helped John catch up as he can run like nobodies business and wins all the local run-cycle-run duathlon events.

So if you were John, would you just sit on GU wheel and wait for a sort of sprint moment ? Conserve the energy?

 

or do you hammer it past and break the spirit letting the guy know you still go lots of power in the legs ?

10 miles to the tar road, then navigation becomes easy as does the riding!!

 

Tar road a lot further away than that. That long stretch between Calvinia and the poort at the south end of the Ceres Karoo is very much dirt. (Its the longest stretch of road between two towns in South Africa - driven there lots of times).

 

There are short stretches of tar between the Karoo and Ceres, then its tar to Wellington.

Well, no drafting, so can't technically sit his wheel...
