Paul Ruinaard Posted February 19, 2015 Share like i said steep learning curve........ wanting to use disc brakes, so looking at a mtn bike wheel set. getting into the debate with myself about which wheel will be faster on the road. Over an audax distance of 600km I need as much help as I can get, so trying to figure out lowest rolling resistance but best comfort for long riding. I sound like such a fairy - one would never think I pedalled a mtn bike 350 odd km's through the Namibian desert in under 22 hrsI used a set of MTB 29er wheels. Carbon rims on American Classic hubs. Paul Ruinaard Posted February 19, 2015 Share Go wider on the tyres. I ride 35 mm and have been up to 42 mm for more off road uses. I am using Conti CX tyres tubeless. They work fine on the road - got them locally. I am a big guy (110kg +) and run them at approx 4 to 4,5 bars tubeless on carbon clinchers. I am a bit worried about the rims sidewall holding up at higher pressures. Rolling resistance and comfort is great. IN fact comfort is exceptional MTB rims work fine - if you really want porn gte a set of ZTR Iron Cross rims - havent seen them here though. The carbon rims i got work a treat and can double as MTB rims as well. Put a set of brake levers on your bar tops as well - it will be very useful when off road as you dont wnat to be in the drops down a drop off i can assure you.... the nerd 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I would rather have a steel fork when it comes to commuting - handling load, pavements and rough roads That frameset gives you the best of both worlds in my opinion ... I have been looking for a steel fork for my cross … but couldn’t find any that would suit the Ridgeback. I also have a part carbon fork on mine, ….. alu steerer, carbon stanchions and alu bottom. I come from old school where my brother use to weld bicycle frames together to make our own tandems. Steel frames and forks was the norm. We once had a ugly where the (steel) fork failed …. Remember getting back home and my mom looking at us ... both bloody with gashes out the arms, shoulders and legs .... high speed down the local hill when it all came apart ... With the advent of the carbon era I have been very weary of trying anything other than steel in the front …. But alas had to let go .. I still have my tange chromoly Peugeot with the steel forks, but my race bike now have carbon too …. I still browse the internet for carbon failure ….
