Is going 1x10 really worth it?!?

It's hard to explain, or put your finger on it.... But if it suits your riding style, you'll know why 1x10 is awesome. It just feels right.

Well put.

How easily attainable are the longer screws?

For some reason my conversion worked with the stock B-screw. Just try it out and see if you can clear the 42t cassette. If not, take out the screw and go to your local hardware store and buy the same screw just a bit longer.

If you use the RAD cage you will not need to bother about the B-screw anymore. It will work in the intended range.

mine too, and this is with a medium cage... so first try, it may not be needed

Good pointer, I also had a medium cage clutch XT derailleur

I'd you've got a 3 by crank then use the middle mount. You mite need longer bolts though as the NW chain ring is quite abt thicker than a normal chain ring.

Its easy to do the conversion yourself, you'll be removing more than putting back in anycase ;-)

Just put it on the 2x crank where the big chainring was. The chain line may be off by 2-3mm but I never felt that this was a problem. Depending on your bottom bracket width and spacer setup you can move your crank in by one spacer (2.5mm). But I think the effect is more academic. I am on a 32t Raceface since almost 3000km and it shows wear now. The thinner teeth are really thinned and worn from the sides but the ring still works well. I give it another 1000km or so.

Depending on the size of your front ring, your riding preference (spinning vs pushing), and how strong you are, you'll find you're riding one part of your cassette a little more. Set your chain line to favour that part of the cassette....

Just to throw another curve-ball into the debate:

I've been riding on a 1x10 setup for more than 2 years using a 36t chain ring and a 11-36t cassette. My strength has really improved a lot and I now enjoy grinding a heavy gear up a steep climb.

Lately I've increased my training in preparation for the Atta, and now struggle with knee pains after long rides. Seems like I'm putting too much strain on my legs.

So before you attempt a tough stage race on a 1x10 or SS, just remember that your muscles aren't the only things that will suffer, especially if you have 'sensitive' knees/hips.
