Very neat!

Did you do a 36 up front? And what chainring is that?

It's a 32T chainring from kitted.co.za and a 40T from rapide.co.za on the rear casette.

1x10 is great for the normal distance rides and races if you have the legs for it.

Do the 36One on a 1x10 and you will have monster legs, broken legs

OR...

You going to change back to 2x10:)

I see this 1xsomething drivetrain is increasingly popular with a number of benfits and thinking of a conversion myself. One post said to simply remove the samll and large chainring and get a 30/32/34 tooth narrow/wide chainring to relace the middle one with a chain guide.

I run XT deore 9 speed set up. Would the above work? Is it Possible to conver to 10sp withouth changing cassette, shifter and rear deralluer?

No, you'll need to change to a 10 speed cassette, 10 speed derailleur and 10 speed shifter. Saying that, you can run 1x9 with just a change to a narrow wide ring in front.

That's what i thought. So the cehapest option is to just replace the chainring upfront. If i get a narrow wide chainring, is a chain guide required? What size chainring is best for 1x9 setup? Is a 32t sufficinet or maybe a 30t. Not the fittest person....yet.

Chain retention with a narrow wide ring works best with a 10 speed clutch derailleur. However, there are plenty of posts across the interwebs with guys running a narrow wide ring and a non clutch derailleur (either 9 or 10 speed) without dropping chains.

Personally, I run a SS ring in front with my 1x9 setup and a Paul chain guide.

Regards gearing, 32t in front with a 34-11 nine speed cassette on a 29+. Enough gears for me to ride in Sabie and Thaba Trails blue.

Ok so not that technically minded so what is a clutch derailleur? I have an XT shadow. Can you tell me where you got the chainguide from as they not very easy to find. I tend to stick to the green route at Thaba as blue is currently beyond my fittness level. Thanks for the advice.

Clutch derailleurs have built in friction material at one of the pivots, that, when engaged, slows the movement of the derailleur down. Shimano's are called Shadow Plus and SRAM are Type 2 derailleurs.

Got my Paul chain guide (http://www.paulcomp.com/chainkeeper.html) from Grant at Sprocket & Jack, 45 Chester Road, Parkwood.

As with everything in life everyone is going to be different. I just turned 40 and started single speeding this year. I enjoy it immensely. I know it may hurt me down the line. But for now it is how most of my riding is done. I am going to attempt the Atta on it. I know it is going to hurt. Really hoping for a sub 8. Did last year on a 34 front 11-36 and pulled a 6.45. My training is just about to kick into hell or high water mode. My body stops turning the crank long before my knees give in. Good luck for the race and if I survive it I will buy you a beer at the end.

copperhead trying to get into the hardcore school of hard knocks?
