I'm actually surprised that they still call it Black Friday in the States.

They have become so overly PC sensitive about issues like this that you cant even say you " Blacked out the frame of your bike " - The correct terminology is You murdered it out - Really ?? That's way more sensitive ..

But I agree, the whole world jumping on this Black Friday thing, when it's an American tradition .. seems a bit silly.

Black Friday is the official start of the holiday shopping season.  It's termed black Friday because stores would normally be operating in the red, and after this day, ie the day after Thanksgiving, they would have made enough sales that they are operating in the black again.

does it really matter? the irish immigrants introduced Halloween to the yanks and they embraced with open arms - good for them. My kids have been celebrating it for the past 5 odd years and its heaps of fun for them...something I never had as a child. as for Black Friday...sure its a yank thing and sure our stores are using it for marketing rather than ridiculous special like they do in the states...but so what...either embrace it or ignore it. Some people might be thankful for those 10% reductions in prices of goods

and what have we created ourselves? well heritage day is a uniquely south african thing that is not only about braaing but also coming to work in traditional clothes/outfits. What else?

haha, I was about to reply the same. Does it really Matter? I think not.

As for the Americanization - since coming back to SA, I've noticed that we're influenced primarily more from Britain.  Using your argument about American traditions coming here, what about Guy Fawkes and Boxing Day?

i for one have absolutely no problem with black friday sales- on the contrary, since everything of substance that I buy (except a tube or bread) being imported at half the cost.

I am not going to allow a pathetic goverment with a majority selfish citizens hold me back, and you guys shouldnt either- embrace international sales =)

If you want to go fully in to Americanization, these are the following Holidays/events that are celebrated throughout the year.  Along with decorations for your house - inside and outside:

January - New Years and Black history month (due to Martin Luther King Day)

February - Valentines Day

March - St Patrick's Day

April - Spring/Easter

May - Mother's Day and Memorial Day

June - Father's Day

July - 4th of July

August - Back to School

September - Labor Day

October - Halloween

November - Thanksgiving

December - Christmas
