I will post images tonight when I get home.  I was running 39/26T up front and 11-36 at the rear.  I did not have to change the chain length as I measured it over the 36T up front and 42T at the rear and had a 3 link overlap from which I understand should be fine.  The b screw is very short, maybe 5mm long and I had it screwed all the way in but it was not enough for it to move the derailleur into place for the 42T

Paul.

if the B tension screw is not long enough to allow the gap for the derailleur to move past the 36 then you have answered your own question. it will not work no matter what you do until you replace the B screw with a longer one.

No. Don't change your RD, your chain is probably too short. Can you post a pic of the RD when it's in the top most gears, or at least as high as it will shift?

@Mayhem sounds like the OP's chain is long enough, i remember reading an article a while back on Pink bike saying the XO and XX deraileurs dont like a 40t or 42t at all..

@Paul - that link you posted to the X9 type 2 will work (if you cant get yours to work) and has the added Bonus of the Clutch - which reduces chain slap and your chain coming off the front chain ring

Here is the article i was referring to

See under "tech Info"

"We used a Shimano XTR cassette and an old-school non-clutch XTR long-cage rear derailleur. SRAM X5 through X9 and Shimano XT and XTR ten-speed rear derailleurs will work in both medium and long cage versions. Oneup Components has acompatibility page that is regularly updated"

Cool. Then get a longer b screw (if it's short, that's probably your problem) and you MAY have to get a longer chain as (according to the article that CaneRat posted, the top jockey wheel needs to be canted further back to be able to clear the 42t.

I don't know why the X0 RD in a medium cage won't work if you mod the b screw to give it that extra bit of clearance, unless the parallelogram just isn't big enough.

Still - get the longer screw, and rule out the cheapest mod first. Then longer chain with longer scre (an extra chain won't hurt anyway) and then last place you get an X9 type 2 RD in medium cage.

Interesting, the b-tensioner on an XT RD is about 15mm long and I know some of the giant cog suppliers do issue and extra b-tensioner screw as part of their kit.

ok boys, the longer b-screw did the trick.  Can shift into 42T perfectly.  Most of the gears shift perfectly and just need to sort out one or two which will happen today.  Super stoked.  Thanks for all the help.

So thought I would give feedback after 1 week of riding.  Everything works fantastically.  The gear shifts are smooth and to date have not lost the chain off the chain ring up front so very happy.
