Friend of mine was killed by a woman doing her make up whilst driving .

He was commuting and was a top cyclist for 20 years plus .

She said : sorry .

He was dead .

His wife was was a widow .

His kids were without a dad .

And then we have cyclists of all people who attacks the OP for doing what the traffic cops are not doing .

1. I think of it this way: should I do something that could potentially, and has a high likelihood, injure or kill someone else? Nope. So I wait with texting and even very rarely use bluetooth. The bluetooth is not just for safety, but after a usually looooong day at the office I deserve some quiet time.

2. I got even better as this with the Discovery Insure Drive app competition thing a month or two ago. Just handling your phone while driving would knock you back a couple of points so I wouldn't touch my phone! Quickly realized that I'm not a single bit worse off. I'll text my wife when I leave the office so she knows I'm on my way and she wouldn't text me and knows I'm not going to text her.

This, along with no DSTV / SABC at home, has been a bit of a revelation. Hardly ever is there something THAT urgent that in my 20/30min drive home we HAVE to talk to each other. Facebook / Instagram / Twitter all can wait. Emails can wait. And by now I know a WhatsApp coming through on't be from my wife.

Sorted. All we need is less.

This lady came from behind and past me this morning driving while on her phone, turned all of a sudden left without even indicating and almost took me out. It was a very close shave! She stopped at woolies, still on her phone. The child next to her wasn't even buckled up, should have been in a child seat. I knocked on her window and asked her if she noticed that she almost took me out! Her reply was that she is "so sorry". I told her she should not use her phone while driving and i left. Should i have just left it because I'm not a cop and just go on my merry way?

What does "so sorry" mean if i was killed or landed in hospital with broken bones and/or ruptured organs? Would "so sorry" take away the pain of the family & friends who lost a loved one or could it take away the pain while lying in hospital with broken bones and/or ruptured organs? What about the financial impact it could have caused. Would she pay my salary or pay me back the money i paid for the first couple of races i entered for next year, the flights, shuttle services and accomodation? It's obviously just a big fat NO, "so sorry" does nothing, it has no meaning.

That's my point.

It would infuriate me no end if some self-righteous pr*ck gave me an earful for doing so when, in all likelihood, he's just done the same thing.

And quite right too Mike. Most of us apologise when we've made a mistake on the roads (cutting someone off etc.).

But I'll guarantee that you don't smile and wave to all and sundry around you every time you've made a call on your phone while stationary at a traffic light.

So...

I don't know your family or if you have dependants, but hypothetically speaking then... if with your logic I am doing something illegal, like driving and talking on my cellphone, don't notice your wife or kid in front of me because I'm distracted and talking on the cellphone and end up killing one of them... I can throw the above logic at you and you will of course forgive me because it is all right, everyone does it ?

The world is a fcuked up place because of spastically retarded sentiment like this...

Wake up, driving and talking on cellphones without handsfree kills more people than drunk driving in some areas now.

That's something a lot of people just don't get, it is your phone to be used at your convenience to be answered when it suits you and not the caller.

I commute daily, if I must stop every time to tell a driver to get off their phone a 1 hour journey will take 8 hours.

I also don't get it, why people don't use Bluetooth, a lot of the culprits drives cars with bluetooth. and ear phones you can pick up for R30 on the side walk and a bluetooth earpiece for R100 at Diskem.

I hardly get calls (i'm not important) but I got one this morning whilst driving, so lekker to chat hands free, can't see what the big deal is? most phones pair automatically anyway

In the UK, it is standard after a serious accident to check if there was any activity on the cells of drivers leading up to the accident. If you are found to have been texting or talking when the accident happened, you are in deep ***

that's clever - people's insurance companies should forfeit cover if they were on their phones

My experience with road rage is no one wins. Even if you come out tops and inflict pain physical or verbal on the other party you will still be mad with yourself and the feeling lasts long after the incident. Anger is a wasteful emotion it uses too much energy.

I would have kept it shut and just moved on. Pointless to cause hassles with a clever driver. It provokes conflict, noting more... It wont make me obey rules if I get provoked.
