Try another belt. I'm on my 3rd in 2 years on a edge 810. In fact now using a polar belt which cost less than R300 instead of the garmin belt. It works with the garmin sensor

Thanks for the suggestion. Have the same issue with the Garmin Premium strap and was looking for a cheap alternative.

Not yet. Don't currently have a small enough screwdriver at my disposal to open up the unit.

Just be very careful when opening and closing the back cover as the screws are very soft and prone to stripping which renders the unit useless. Yes I learnt this the hard way!

Please let us know how it goes.

Went on a cycle up Montagu Pass on Sunday and my HRM was erratic. Too low or no reading at all.

Considering leaving it at home tomorrow morning.

I can also confirm that I solved this problem using a Polar soft strap and Garmin heart rate sensor.

The Polar strap is far more comfortable than the Garmin premium strap and it seems more accurate and durable too.

I have the same issue with my Garmin soft strap...

I’ve concluded the Garmin soft strap HR monitor is flawed by design, and I can’t recommend it to anyone. After lots more experimentation, I confirmed the problem is at least partly due to sweat and salt build-up in the strap fabric. Unfortunately, washing the strap doesn’t really fix the problem. In my tests, hand washing with soap in a sink of warm water didn’t help at all, and machine washing with other laundry (per Garmin’s instructions) only partially helped. After washing, the problem returned again within a matter of days, if not sooner.

Suggested solution:

Others have successfully repaired these new HRM3-SS “soft straps” by cutting them completely between the two snap-in buttons, then trimming the edges until it looks a bit like: *)(* I’ve done the same on an older HRM2-SS, and it worked. It breaks that permanent or sporadic short circuit caused by bad design – or salt buildup…

first things first check that the strap is tight enough, if you can fit more than 3 fingers in its not

If that doesn't work replace the battery 2023 R10 from dischem

If that doesn't work take it to garmin, don't know where you live but navworld who handles the queries in jhb are awesome, i had a broken strap 10 minute turnaround time

Reset worked for me

To perform the master reset:

  1. Power device off
  2. Press and hold Page/Menu, Start/Stop and Power simultaneously
  3. Release buttons when the word "Garmin" disappears

The garmin HR belts give problems after a few months.

On my 2nd belt already and only got the unit 9 months ago. Garmin replaced mine as it was still under guarantee. You need to wash that belt after every 3/4 use to get rid of salt and don't leave the sensor in the belt when not using it. When you done unclip the sensor.

When using it make sure you wet the 2 locations on the belt. Its got to do with static or something that can damage the belt if they are not wet.

New HT belts are like R700-R800. Crazy! When mine gave issues i took it to Cape union in Canal walk. They buggered up the screws of my sensor trying to replace the battery - so i got a new HR sensor aswell.

My garmin strap also started giving wrong readings the times it did give readings. Replaced batteries but had the same problem. Decided to visit Sportsmanswarehouse to get a polar belt. The sales lady said it would not work and promptly got a polar belt and opened a  garmin watch to get the sensor. This specific sensor kept popping of the belt, but I decided to try it in any case. My sensor that came with the fenix 2 watch fitted perfectly to the polar strap and the readings are working fine. Best would be to take your sensor with when getting the polar belt to confirm that the sensor fits.
