Which GPS watch to get

had the Forerunner 15 for a few days now - and done 5 runs with it...mainly on the road but one run in the forest. it maintained GPs signal no problem in the forest as would be expected. Charged it fully on Friday night - and apart from about 30 minutes in total when I was downloading data and syncing through my computer, I have not charged it yet. Thats about 6 hours of running so far...Battery is on its last bar but hasn't complained yet.

Functionality is fine for my needs i mainly look at time and lap pace..using 1km auto laps. I'm going to try the virtual pacer for the half marathon I'm doing on Sunday so I can keep in and around my desired pace.

the only thing that confused me a bit was when the timer moves to the hour mark the hour indicator 1 or 2 etc is a small little number to the left of the main timer....I thought the watch had reset or something until I eventually noticed it.

Everything else is all I need and its going to serve me for all  marathons and ultra marathons except comrades (unless I push for a silver! LOL)

As i too have a Garmin Edge 500 I would like to stay with garmin and am busy looking at the FR70 for R1799

anyone used it before?

I have a FR70 and I use it only to track heart rate as I am not interested in pace and distance whilest training.  Only disappointment for me was that it does not record or display heart rate while I am swimming.  I am now looking at the Polar FT1/2/3 etc.

ANT+ technology does not support transferral of signals beneath water.  If your Garmin has BlueTooth then you could place a BT Optical Heart Rate sensor on your wrist (next to Garmin).  The heart rate can then be transferred via BlueTooth.

I currently have the Polar RS300X, and looking at an upgrade. I'm in two minds between the Polar M400 and the Edge 500. It will mainly be used on the bike, but some running every now and then. I know the Edge is not suitable for running, but I will still have the RS300. However if I buy the M400, I can pass the RS300 on to my wife.

In terms of funtionality I want GPS to track route & distance and want to monitor heart rate.

Any opinions ?

I'm very keen on that Polar M400. It looks fantastic and dcrainmaker gave it a great review. My only issue is the battery life at 8 hours. If you're wanting to do a Bill Rowan Comrades that's a bit of a deal breaker.

I knew that anything over silver comrades will require some serious moola to be shelled out so instead I went for the Garmin FR15 which will still manage a 2 oceans and I have been very happy with it

For comrades i'm sticking my bryton bike gps in my back pocket and using the watch to manage splits based upon time of day

I got the Forerunner 15 and i must say in very impressed !!! Cheap reliable and easy to use! Love the data display in the garmin connect site. Over all i dont see why i would use anything else or need more.

I'm in that awkward space between products. Not quite serious enough or stat obsessed to go with high end watches like the Fenix2 or Ambit2/3 yet too keen on duathlons and longer runs to go for something like the M400 or TomTom Multisport which have too short a battery life or can't handle activity switching.

also doesnt look like you lugging big ben around on your wrist

I find the step counter a bit of a useless thing as someone who buys a GPS watch will be active and not really worrying about how many steps you have walked. I would like the option to turn that off or hide it if I could..but thats minor. I focus on time and pace (per auto 1km lap) and bpm if i have my HRM on

I use the TomTom multisport and its a decent enough instrument....an xt920 it aint htough but for the coin it has sufficient functions and gives me the data I require. The hook up with Strava is also excellent .

The only issue I have is the battery life, its fine for ultra triathlons but not for Iron man and as should I want to do the comrades it wont last the time I need to finish it :) ...
