Boys and Girls, this is why we wear a helmet.

Came down hard on the gravel - tar junction between Vleesbaai and Gouritsmond near Mosselbay on a slightly wet road.

Realised the value of having a cellphone with you (called the wife to pick me up) and of having some sort of visible identification (ICE-ID) or similar - I wear a bright red band on my left arm with all the basic details (Medical Aid Number, 3 x Emergency contact numbers).

Luckily I eventually got up after the fall with some cuts and bruises but it could have been much more interesting.

Keep your helmets on your heads in 2015!

I had a minor lack of skill landing a mini jump, came down so hard it took me while to realize bike might be broken.... when the bruise on back of head had formed i noticed helmet is cracked horribly.

This just once again made me realise that no matter what is said I will wear my Helmet and any other protective gear regardless of comments.

Unfortunately now I am left with Full face or normal MTB for little while. Etto Helmet really saved my bacon tho.

I can attest to this as well.

I cant believe the idiot strings we see here around riding without helmets and riding up the wrong side of the road for visibility.

I just stopped arguing at a time - leave them to eliminate themselves from the gene pool thereby reducing the breeding stock and leaving more for me to cover....

Last year a driver looked right through me and caused a T-bone @ 40km/h on a TT bike. My most vivid recollection of the event was how hard my (helmeted) head hit the road on the other side of her car.

A few weeks later I got my MTB wheel caught in a erosion ditch and made an amateurish double forward somersault with a half-twist. My most vivid recollection of the event was how hard my (helmeted) head hit the earth on the other side of the maneuver.

I got up and walked away from both events, albeit gingerly and cut/bruised/sore.

I will never cycle without a helmet.

My mate came off (40 km/h +-) and broke his bell helmet in the same place along with his collar bone. Doctor said the impact that caused his helmet to break that would have killed him if he wasn't wearing it.

Glad you're okay, Deon.

Remember, take you're busted helmet to a Specialized dealer - Spez will give you a 40 or 50% (can't remember which) discount on a new helmet, when you bring the broken in.

You couldn't squeeze in a half pike for full marks?

I was cycling home after a ride at Tokai in September this year. Was a little fatigued and it was raining so my head was down to prevent the rain from hitting my glasses. Lapse of concentration and i ended up hitting a pole travelling at 40kms per hr. I bent the pole about 45 degrees, smashed the back of my head against the tar and ended up in a praying position. I only realised I hit my head the evening when I saw almost every part on the inside of my helmet was cracked. That Scott helmet saved my life. Almost dislocated my arm from shoulder and was inches away from a broken collar bone. Took 6 weeks to recover, could of been worse.

NO HELMET NO RIDE!!!!

WOW!!!

Glad you are alright...

Last year Feb/March I also had a bad fall...

Hit a table top jump (Done a couple dozen times..) and I high-tailed for some reason going about 35-40KM.... landed about 2-3 meters into the flats far over my front wheel and made contact with my head first... heard a cracking noise and thought it was my bike again.... (It was my helmet)

Because...

6 months earlier broke my collar bone hitting an erosion ditch with my front wheel disappearing on me bombing down a jeep track also easily 35+km in the Jeep Hill 2 Hill and snapped my carbon bike in a few places.

The worse sound to hear are you are flying through the air....

Needless to say the over the table top jump call I walked away with a broken helmet, and a roasty from my shoulder down to my butt... Not fun for a few weeks...

But I did not even have a concussion....

I am SOLD on helmets before that, but this drove it home hard for me...

I dont even go down the street without a helmet....
