I have done this tri a few times before, just a heads up on the sandy bits. Went otb twice due to a combination of soft sand and not aggressive enough front tyre. That sand is damn deceiving

Somehow I have signed up for the Grabouw Xterra triathlon next month and am in the market for my first MTB. I have asked friends who are in the know, looked at online reviews etc and have decided to spend 12-13k on a well made hard tail. My local bike shop has the 2015 Specialized Rockhopper for 13k....is there any reason not to go with a new bike from a respected brand? Any advice welcome!

if you're buying it specifically for the full xterra course, I wouldn't necessarily go for a 29er

the bike course is short, but has a lot of climbing in it- 26er wins there

there is a scary crazy rockgarden - 26er wins there

talk of sandy sections is spot on, but that's a tyre choice not a tyre size choice.

I don't know how tall you are/leg length etc. but you will find a lot more value in the 26er second hand market. what you have done well is get some advice from friends in the know....probably the best thing you can do

Get a 2013 Axis A20 from Solomons

Not a big name brand, but way better components than you'll get on anything else in this price range. It'll have similar components to a R20k Spez, Scott etc bike.

The 2014 GT Zaskar Elite has ridiculously impressive components for around R14k...

Wow, only saw the bit about the Zaskar now. That's A LOT of bike for R14 000

I'd take it before someone else does!!

Now that you have the bike go and ride the course. It's ridiculously technical for an Xterra course where most of the field have very poor skills and end up walking the rock garden. It's no joke for a newbie.

You'll be glad to know you inspired me to get same bike from same guy - absolutely love it!
