Restless legs

Hi all.

Whenever I train hard or very consistent at high intensity I get restless legs at night.

I have had it for years. I use Pexola.

What other advice can you give to prevent it and then cure or control it.

I ran out of meds and cant find anywhere. Dischem promised to call me the minute they have sourced it or an alternative. In the meanwhile im enduring hell.

The potato in bed trick is a sick joke. Does not work, apparently it works for bush people but not me.

Please help. I cant sleep at night.

I also get/have "restless legs" (even if I'm not training). I use Cramp Prevent from Biogen (available at Dischem) and find it definitely reduces the restlessness.

If I remember correctly, it's actually listed on the bottle as one of the things it can be used for (aside from cramp prevention).

Specialist Physician prescribed me Trepiline for sleep disturbance/restless legs. Nothing worse than those "itching" legs coupled with insomnia! :(

Trepiline is a failed anti-depressant, is very cheap prescription. Chat to your doc.

They initially gave me this. But it did not work for me. I feel very bad the next day. Stay tired for days. And gives me a babalas feeling. Even if I just take half or qaurter of a tablet.

I also have it, since as long as I can remember. No cramps though. At last I found slowmag: it works well. I take 2 each evening before sleep. Potassium also works.

When I was young(er) I used to lie really still for a while and it would go away - pure agony!

Do you also get cramps? I went through a stage of hectic RLS but I used Calmag and that seemed to help. It wasn't an instant fix tho.

No cramps, my ankles especially all the way around become very uncomfortable.

I think some people confuse (not saying this is the same for you  ) spasms and sore muscles for RLS.

I never cramp on the bike either.

My feet, especially my ankles become very warm and then I simply can not sit still .

Ok thanks.

My knees feel really hot when I'm going to have a kicking night. That's the only way i can describe it.

I've recently changed my diet quite dramatically. The whole no carbs thing. The RLS has gone completely and the cramping has eased significantly. The downside is that my fueling on rides isn't lekker. My legs feel tired immediately and then slowly wake up. Not great when you live in the Cape and there's a climb as soon as you pedal out of the parking lot. I think I need to eat carbs before a ride. Not that I'm any sort of athlete or anything.

Anyways. Thanks.

I am not a fan of the mixed calcium magnesium products like berocca calmag - much too expensive for what they are - really one should split the intake of calcium and magnesium to not have them inhibit each others uptake - but I am not sure what the magnitude of the inhibition is offhand.

Hey V12man. With regards to absorption of calcium, it is my understanding that the opposite is true, that is, you actually need magnesium for your body to be able to properly absorb calcium (see, for e.g. http://www.mgwater.com/calmagab.shtml). Therefore, you should always take a mixture of both if you want the calcium you ingest to be fully utilised.

With regards to cost, I totally agree and that why I pay about R30 for 30 tabs for the supplement I use. I have found that this works very well for me and my family.

Ciao.

My understanding is there is a difference between specific tissue absorbtion and absorbtion from the gut - probably going to be as clear as mud... :) In any case my primary concern is the first line absorbtion from the gut - especially given that you would be giving is a super size dose compared to normal via your diet.

This is a good general overview

Here is something to muddy the waters so to speak...

Fist night in about two weeks that I did not have issues. I had supper, took that cramp eze stuff. Drank plenty water during the day. I stretched mybkegs before bed which I never do. And I must say I slept well. I had a tingle every now and again but it was about 99 % better.

Not sure if this is RLS but would appreciate any input, suffer from hot and aching lower legs and feet, mainly at night, and find I need to keep stretching my calves and shins throughout the night....very restless sleep! Now I also have quite persistent knots in my right calf that the physio can't budge! I've had my blood circulation checked and seems good. Does not cramp or bother me riding.

Having read this thread, I am now trying Slow Mag but not much change in the last couple of days.
