RAF has bogger all money. Ask anyone who had tried to claim as a cyclist...

if the 38 bucks covers you outside of csa sanctioned events (i.e in general training or riding) then it's well worth it

But it seems that the money goes to claiming from the RAF.

So it does not help?

[*]Road Cover will facilitate claims for any injuries during training and racing, against the Road Accident Fund

.

So, its not really cover at all. Just MEANINGLESS TWADDLE. And a dubious way for Hollard to fleece us out of R38 pure and simple.

CSA are supposed to look after us, yet they enter into a partnership with Hollard which is designed to screw us.

Harryn, it's very seldom I will support an insurance company but in this instance I'm afraid I think you don't understand. If you take A look at the CSA website you I will see that the R38 includes membership to a company called Road Cover that manages RAF claims non your behalf and takes no contingency fee like the crooked lawyers. You get 100% of the payout. RAF paid out 15 billion last year of which more than half went to paying lawyers fees. Value???. I think so.

The insurance portion covers you for 20k worth of medical expenses if you are injured on your bike anywhere anytime. So for 2 bucks a month you get all of this. Meaningless twaddle? I don't think so but rant as you like. I personally would be thanking CSA for getting a great value addition to the membership fee.

Forgive my sceptism. If you have a serious accident, you need what you term the "crooked lawyers" to institute legal action against the RAF, not some insurance geek trying to fill in a form.

Nope you still not getting it. RoadCover is not a insurance company. It is a company that is made up of lawyers, investigators, accident reconstruction experts etc that are extremely well positioned to get your RAF money back as it is all they do and have been doing it for years. Unlike the crooked lawyers they provide this service for a monthly or annual fee and don't take 25-45% out of the RAF payout they pay 100%.

Again if I am in hospital after a serious accident, I do want an insurance geek looking after my interests.

It's actually 195 for members that fall under CGC as it's 120 for CSA membership plus whatever your provincial fee is.

I have always found the provincial fee an 'interesting' one.

I mean really, what do we in Gauteng (or the Free State and North West) get that justifies the cost being higher than the rest? Surely there should be a single fee and you are just affiliated to your province.

Various Provincial Levies:

  • Gauteng Central --> R75
  • Gauteng North --> R50
  • KwaZulu-Natal --> R50
  • Free State --> R75
  • Eastern Province --> R50
  • North West --> R75
  • Limpopo --> R50
  • Mpumalanga --> R25
  • Northern Cape --> R50
  • Southern Gauteng --> R50
  • Western Cape --> R25

It's simply because there are fewer csa sanctioned events in gauteng for the province to draw some revenue so that is why the affiliation fee is higher.

I have a scenario I want to check:

If I injure myself while mountain biking and the hospital fees exceed R20 000, will my medical aid pick up the remainder of the amount owing, or will they decline it by saying that I took a different policy for sporting activities?

This is my main concern with being forced to join this Group Insurance Cover when/if I renew my CSA License fees.

As long as you don't claim from both for the same costs it should be fine but as we all know there are always loop holes. I would check with your medical aid first, but you dont have to use the cover from CSA, it's just there if you want it.

If that R20k insurance covers casualty emergency room visits as a result of any riding injuries sustained at anytime then that is a bargain of note!

I wonder, be keen if it does, can't see it being sustainable

Good Question Lurch

Maybe approach your Provincial MTB Commission and ask them ?

IMO, the single fee, affiliated to your Province ideal will only result in all fee's being bumped up to R75. Personally I am VERY happy with what KZN MTB does for R50..in fact I would be happy to pay more.

Stretch's comment below makes sense and I had never thought of it that way before.

In my mind, their opinion was simply that, "Gauteng is where the money is, they can afford it"

As for the Free State and North West, I thought they might feel included with us because hey who wouldn't want to be upgraded to GP from those two places...;) :P

It is cheap because it only pays out under very specific conditions, ie when something happens when riding your bike not anything else.

Also 20K is not a lot when it comes to medical expenses, it really is just a bit of a "softener"

If you are actually concerned about medical costs when in an accident you still need to take out proper cover.
