Sick of road bike and punctures!!!

My wife was regularly getting punctures on our road rides, up to four per ride, her wheels had sealant in, but it just used to squirt everywhere when punctured.

So i ended up filling them with mountain bike (has tiny different sized beads in it) sealant.  And so far not one flat in a 6 months.

I used the Sportsmans Warehouse generic brand sealant, it is magic.  Haven't had a flat on my mountain bike in years and many times I have pulled a thorn out and heard a quick pffft of air and then it seals...

Cheap and works!!

The problem with Conti is they're so ****** tight to get on/off the rim. I've broken a few tyre levers.

I love my Serfas Seca's (so much so that I replaced the Conti's on all 4 bikes). About 1/4 - 1/2 the price of Conti, and they last forever. I ride around Paarden Eiland with all its broken glass, nails, and other industrial debris and haven't had a puncture in a year. Actually, I was looking at a serious slit of nearly 1/2cm today, but they keep riding.

I bought new conti GPX4000 for my new wheels, had to throw the rear away after a week it was so cut up. 5 punctures in 6 rides!! At R800 per tyre, not impressed.

Going back to gatorskins, found the foldable ones pop on and off a bit easier LeTurbo.

I run GP4000 Chilli's @ 120psi (my training and racing tyres don't take bar!). Haven't had a puncture for well over a year. Run 'em too low and you'll suffer over and over again plus it'll handle like arse.

I also keep my new sets of tyres in a darkened room (aka a garage / store room) all unfurled and hanging up. I also rotate them a bit to make sure the natural oils all keep near the surface. Not sure if it helps but it used to be and old mechanics tale to make sure the rubber was prime.

Next wheels though will be tubeless. The way forward.

All I can say is GATORSKINS! My front ture has done more than 5000km. No jokes. It looks bad but not one puncture in the current condition. Also check your rimtape!

I had 6 punctures on one ride some time back.  Used both spare tubes and bombs, then people were stopping to donate tubes and bombs.  Eventually had to push the bike back the last 10kms. Was ready to give up riding!  Turned out to be the rimtape.  If you have your old tubes, check if the puncture is on the inside or outside of the tube.  That will tell you where the problem is.

Good tyres + good habits ... these include correct tyre pressures, removal of embedded debris, and general awareness when out riding.
