Best road pedals

Hi,

The bearings on my Time xpresso 8 pedals packed up after 8 weeks. I am looking for some advice on the best road pedals for +/- R2K

I also had bad luck with the new Time's.  I was an avid supporter of Time.

Switched over to Look.  Very nice pedal. I have around 5000km now on mine with no issues.

Your foot is way more secure in the pedal.

I have heard good things about Speedplay also.  I just never had the change to try them out as not many shops stock them.  The cleat puts me off as well as it does not fit to any and every shoe.

You're already on the best pedals. Why did the bearings pack up? How much do you weigh?

Not sure why they packed up. I hear it is a common problem. I weigh about 82kg.

Carbon Looks the whole way. Fit and forget. Keo Carbon HM's with Ti hardware (ironman edition for some reason!). No issues at all.

its not a common problem. I've used TIME, LOOK and Shimano. None have ever given me mechanical grief. My current RXS carbon are 9 years old and on the original bearings. Before that I had LOOK KEO and TIME IMPACT on my two road bikes. Both pedals were about 5 and 6 years old by the time I sold them. Before that I had sets of Shimano Dura Ace and TIme Racing Magnesium and Racing titanium. The Times were from 1988 and are still on their original bearings under the current owner.

Perhaps you just bought a bum pair. Surely the lbs will replace the bearings under warranty

Speed play pedals are the best pedals by far. They unfortunately aren't the easiest to find as new cleats are more expensive that most other brands.

Had mine for 3 years now and with some TLC they are still as smooth as the day I bought them!

Maybe I was just unlucky. Pedals were sent back to agents, who broke them whilst repairing. Now I can get new pedals

Speedplay Zero.

Advantages: low stack height, especially if you have 4 hole shoes that don't need the adapter; lateral adjustment range is set on the cleats, so set it once for all bikes; forward/backward & left/right cleat position can be set independently; replacement parts available; walking on cleats doesn't wear the parts that engage the pedal, besides cleat covers available; superlight, especially the Ti ones.

Downsides: only super pricey shoes have 4 hole soles; cleats expensive; not readily available in ZA (but there is always Wiggle/CRC/etc); no hex head in bolt for proper torque-ing, just 15 spanner.

I left Look behind for Time (RXS/RXE) many years ago and Time for Speedplay about 2 years ago.

I use Ultegra pedals and they're great.  Never had a single issue on them and they are still perfect without me doing anything to them after a three years.
