Please explain, is this an official race with police road closures or just some guys trying to justify what they are doing because they are 'sKILLED' riders?

It's the same vibe as telling someone to ride with a helmet. Who cares what someone else does. Good luck to those doing it. It's illegal. And it's retarded. But it's not going to kill me.

We try so hard to change the ideas of the general driving public but this just makes car drivers hate us cyclists more. Why would we as cyclists want that? It's like dropping bullets off with enemy cos you feel they don't have enough ammunition against us as it is?

It's a race modeled on other Hustle's held worldwide. Not official at all.

Out of the 25-30 riders that pitch up, only 10 or so race it. The others treat it as a normal road ride through streets of Joburg one would normally never cycle.

Admittedly this is not for everyone but let’s put some perspective into it. I can’t remember ever seeing an account where a bicycle accident has caused the death of another person. But motor vehicle accidents cause the deaths of thousands of people daily. So we can deduce that riding a bicycle is non-lethal to others whereas driving a motor vehicle is an extremely high risk activity and an extremely lethal activity. Breaking road laws on a bicycle is non-lethal, except perhaps to myself, but breaking road laws in a motor vehicle is potentially deadly to other road users. So if anyone who watches this video has never broken the speed limit, never got a speeding ticket, never texted or used a mobile phone while driving or has never driven after consuming alcohol, then you may pass judgement, as you are indeed a perfect human and we should worship you as you may be Jesus. If not then you form part of the millions of motor vehicle users that break one or more road laws on a daily basis while operating a lethal weapon and potentially putting hundreds and thousands of innocent people’s lives at risk.

Otherwise enjoy the cycling sub-culture of fixing riding, hustling and alley cat racing (which incidentally is a worldwide phenomenon superbly captured on camera by Lucas Brunelle).

You are correct in your statement that this is not for everyone. Some people just prefer to take more calculated risks, or be a little bit more in control of the variables that can affect an outcome. As an example, a tree does not change position abruptly, its stationary, so chances are good that you will hit a/the tree if you are not careful. A bus however (as in video) is not stationary and therein lies the variability. You don't hit the bus, even if you are careful, it hits you.

You can be commended on your analogies and take on who has the right to deliver an opinion on the contents of the video. It is however opinions of people who does not appreciate the risks taken. Your apparent concern towards your fellow human being is noble.......although the video might suggest otherwise. Have you ever considered the emotional stress a unsuspecting motor vehicle driver will endure if one of these riders would be killed in an accident (and potential financial and legal implications). Oh by the way........it has been documented extensively regarding cyclists that have been in accidents with pedestrians.......with the pedestrian being killed. Nice section of this type of scenario in the video. I gather there are notices distributed to all pedestrians before such an event......so if something should happen it is the "stupid pedestrians".

You also seem to have recognised the risk of severe injury to yourself should something unexpected happen......maybe someone opening a vehicle door while cruising at 60km/h (hopefully that is the max a rider may reach in an urban area). Landing head first, breaking a bone or two, maybe even the neck.......the deduction is that you are comfortable with this and will be able to handle and manage the implications and future consequences.

You might even be able to exchange your current fixie for one of these permanent ones:

(PS: the person featured in the picture was a professional cyclist)

By trying to disqualify people on giving an opinion about a thread post you made highlighting some dubious and unlawful activity, you actually discredited yourself as a equable and objective individual. Even referencing to religion without a reference makes your comments void of any credibility.

To end off.....plan ahead, stay vigilant, don't tempt fate and ride safe.
