Tyre Choice - Strong Sidewall Protection

I've been running Specialized Ground Control (with the Control casing) for almost a year now and in that time I've lost two tyres due to sidewall cuts. The most recent was over the weekend. I love the Ground Controls for the mileage I get, the grip and low-rolling resistance, but their sidewalls are crap.

I'm looking for some input on a tyre with good sidewall protection, that is similar in design to the Ground Control. A good all-round tyre.

Some of the tyres I'm considering:

  1. Continental Mountain King Protection;
  2. Continental Trail King (can't see whether this can be run tjooples);
  3. Geax/Vittoria Barzo or Gato.

Am I missing any other good tyres? I know tyres are very subjective and comes down to personal preference, but I'd value any constructive input.

Had a couple of WTB Wolverines on my bike and they seem to do quite well in the conditions here (rocky with lots of slate and sharp edges to rocks). I think they are 60 TPI or something.

What about the new Spez Grid kind?

Apparently the Grid is stronger / Tougher than the Ground Control

3 rides on Conti's and the sidewalls look like the tyre is 3 years old, they grow a beard.

Was thinking the same about the Grid casing. Haven't ever seen any in the Spez shops. Only ever see Control and S-Works casings.

Thanks for the feedback on the Conti's - bearded tyres  :eek:

Had conti protections for 2years and I only had one issue with cutting the sidewall but that was due to me knocking the wheel in a rut and denting the rim in the process.

I've got a mezcal on the rear with a barzo on the front, brilliant combo with no issues!

I prefer the performance of the Ground Controls to the UST Ardents I had before...but those Ardents are tough and give good milage. The GCs roll about the same maybe a little faster but give more grip and less tread noise. They corner a lot better too.

I miss the Crossmark UST's in your list of tires you consider...

The Crossmark is a bit too rounded for me. If I had to go the Maxxis route, I'd go for the Ardent.

Schwalbe Racing Ralph with snakeskin protection - provided you stay off the tar they will give you good mileage,

Apparently, this "stay off the tar" thing has no basis in fact....

My tyre of choice!

Thoroughly recommended on all aspects (longevity, GRIP, and durability)

I've been on Racing Ralph's and on Kenda Slant Sixes. The Ardents beat them hands down for the riding I do (Lanseria/Cradle...mud, big rocks, loose rocks)

I have to be honest and say for grip I don't really like the crossmark. Reason is that a friend of mine lost the front end a few times with those fitted. he had the Crossmark Lust in front and rear. The front slipping out was fixed with a set of Schwalbe 2.2 SS Pacestar rear  and 2.4 SS trailstar fronts. Now granted the tyres are now a lot wider but the Crossmarks are not great in the grip department. they roll nice on tar though...

Great tyres but IMPOSSIBLE to get (back) on the rim without assistance...
