Hi guys.

I'm looking for a new road bike for my wife. We started riding last year September-ish and I bought her a second hand 2009 Giant OCR 2W with 9 speed Sora components, which is in okay condition. It has a triple crank which still helps on gradients > 8% which she does find useful.

However, when we're out on longer rides, she complains after about 50km's that she struggles to shift the front gears and her hands cramp up a bit.

Since she's really fell in love with road riding, I thought I'd spoil her and get her a new bike, and at the same time hope that the shifting problem goes away? According to online calculators she's a 49cm center to center size, at 1.65m tall.

The problem is weird, as she actually has rather large, strong hands for a woman (ex gymnast). Should I maybe get her measured up first?

Currently I'm looking at something like a Merida Ride Juliet 400 @ R14900 from Cycle Factory.

My concerns are around the quality of the brakes and wheelset, and I also do wonder whether I won't be able to find a new "older" 2013 or so carbon bike for her around the same price.

Edit: My budget is quite flexible, so I can go up (or down), I'm just looking at best value for money.. She however will obviously want the bike to be nice on the eye :)

1. Front derailleur not shifting up is a mechanical issue.

2. Numb hands for longer ride is a bike-fitting issue

but then again, since OP wants to gets a new bike (for a female-rider & available in ZA) I would recommend the Scott speedster 20. (105 5800 shifters & derailleurs, but with an OEM brakes sets and crankset). comfortable geometry & weight at 8.5kg.

The cramping hands could be a result of many things.

Gloves, handle bar tape, position on bike, or even that she might need to relax more when riding. In the beginning I would grip the bars so tight when descending fast that my hands would cramp up.

Thanks for the advice thus far.

Is it at all sensible to go for a bike fitting before shopping around for a bike?

She does say that she feels comfortable on the bike and that the numbness/weakness in her hands are starting later and later into training as we're going along.

Maybe I should be patient, and let her test ride a couple of bikes etc etc before we buy.

I'll look into the Scott Sppedster 20 and Cannondale CAAD8 as suggested as well :)

We will also have the Cube Peleton Race with 105 Groupset in stock later this week...

Go see the guys at Giant Duranville. Giant has a woman range called LIV. Their prices are negotiable and products good.

First time EVER I see disc brakes on a road bike..

And it's 105 full carbon too, but most likely way out of budget.
