Wish i had the same experience on Sunday during a race in Paarl. On my descent with about 7km to go i had a little accident.. Went tumbling a few metres but nothing too serious (Nothing broken at least ). Thing is though, that while i was sitting on the ground gathering my thoughts on how the hell that just happened. About 20 riders flew by and everyone asking.. " Are you ok " but also just flying by without even waiting for an answer. ( As if its just common courtesy to ask the question for the sake of simply asking _ { but i really don't want an answer- so let me not slow down too much!!! } ).

So i decided to get up and realised i needed a 5 alan key as i had lost my tool on the previous ride. Dripping in blood shouting "TOOL" to about another 20 riders, to my surprise it seems that no one actually rides with a multi tool. As the only response i got was NO!!  Mind blowing...!!! Maybe its because my clothes were torn  .

1 of the +/- 40 riders at least had the decency to alert the officials who thought i needed an ambulance. ( Thumbs up to that guy whoever you are )

Fortunately my cuzzy was also riding the race so i waited for him to rock up, sorted out the bike and was on my way again.

All in all i have to say it was a fantastic race, great route, TOO MUCH FUN :whistling: !! but sadly disappointed in the camaraderie amongst riders.

PS: I once took 1h30min out of a race to help 3 complete strangers with their bikes because i believe a wheel is round..

I'm surprised by that.

At Tokai on Saturday there was an accident where a youngster (15) went OTB on the jeep track and the initial reports didn't sound good (awake but unable to speak or move).

I was lurking around the carpark waiting to pick up some pedals when the first reports came in and waited around to guide the ambulance up (I've always wanted to ride in the front of one  ).

Happily when we reached the youngster he was awake and talking, and by now could move his hands and toes.

But the main reason for the post is simply this - every person that passed us stopped and asked if there was anything they could do to help. Every last one of them.

Tokai at least is good like that.

Oh and the accident looked like pure bad luck on the kids part - it looks like he hit a small rock at around 40kph, burped all the air out of his tyre and then it dug in. He apparently face planted in style.

I got word yesterday that he was released from hospital and was fine.

Good to know there are people out there who care man.  Thumbs up to you and all those who stopped to show genuine concern. I have great respect for riders who take the time to help others IN or OUT of races. I'm guessing my experience was purely because this was a race where everyone is more concerned about chasing their best time and improving their seeding.

But on a lighter note: Glad to hear the youngster came out on top. Hope this doesn't keep him off the saddle though. Would be a shame for the sport to lose a young rider.

Lessons we all have to learn. I know what my lesson was.. DO NOT TAKE THE MOUNTAIN FOR A  AAP !!...
