Was at Modders this morning and the sign on the entry kiosk said that the price increase is effective from 1st March on the single entry.  It also said that a decision hadn't been made on the price of the multi-ticket yet.

I love modderfontein and brb but mtbiking is getting very expensive. Taking into consideration the fuel cost and then the entry fee...eish..

why not ride there?

I use to go ride there on Friday mornings during the winter months. My wife would Go with me but she doesnt cycle, just take her laptop and sit by the restaurant. I paid R40 to ride and R30 for her to enter..and now I find out that the runners pay nothing..wow

FYI joggers only get in free on saturday morning before 8 and only with a park run registration barcode.

joggers enter for free pppffttt

the volume of the runners=most of the road  damage the cyclists HAVE TO PAY FOR THE DAMAGE TO THE ROADS (how many cars?? THE RATIO IS DOUBLE )

cyclists versus joggers

same old same old ONE small PORTION OF THE "POPULATION" (users) paying for the rest the ones actually reponsible for most of the damage PAYING ZIP/ZERO/SWEET FOKOL

The joggers don't make it onto the mtb trails from what I saw, though we shared the track from the chicken-run bridge down to the bottom of the tarmac hill before you get into the reserve.  They go round the lake and reservoir where the no entry for bikes signs are.

Yeah thats one of the good things with Modders - unlike delta park the two groups are pretty separate, but if you take the chicken run/bridge at the start, don't start your ride between 8-8:15am and don't come in that time.

Shame the one Saturday a bloke fell over as there was suddenly a wall of runners/walkers and one of him.

The thing that gets me is when i take my bike along to to the park run and want to ride afterwards, I have to pay at the gate.

The fact that cyclists and runners are kept separate?

Word of warning though, if you drive there, get there before 6:50, if you ride there, be careful of cars swerving for runners, walkers, potholes and grumpy ornithologists.

Just as an extra thought: The PWC Cycle Park in Bryanston charged R50 when they opened and now charge R60 for a single visit. The trails there, while well maintained, are far shorter in total distance, there is no wildlife to conserve, and less security is needed than at Modder. They charge only R15 entry for trail runners.

Part of the entry fee at Modder goes to conserving the reserve (e.g. the many indigenous trees planted recently), part goes to the trails and other facilities.

It's frustrating that the Parkrunners get in for free, but then Parkrun is run by volunteers and no maintenance is required if a 1000 people squash a 5km running path flat every week. I do think the runners should pay for bog roll too, though.

I can understand that everything cost money. Just one question..How was all of this funded before we were allowed to cycle there?

I don't have an issue parkrun participants not paying, its 1 day a week for max 1 1/2 hours. Get there early to avoid the the 8am start or arrive later when they on route. All parkrun events are free, to start charging is going to kill it for those choosing Modderfontein.

The property has always been owned by AEL, formerly AECI, and before that the Modderfontein Dynamite Company. A gift from the Transvaal government.  All of the property was transferred to Heartland Properties some years ago, same group. Heartland used to pick up the tab, I'll ask the landlord. Not too sure what the future is now that the Chinese own the rest of the property. Alfred Beit used to have a hunting lodge there, the tower just before the car park was where they spotted game from.

Modderfontein as a whole is a lovely area and I sure hope the new Chinese maga city doesn't destroy that.
