Is it a XX derailleur? If it is, get yourself some KCNC jockey wheels.post-14677-0-03062200-1422864941_thumb.jpg

My XX rear derailleur did the same and this sorted out the problem

Check to see if the derailleur cage is bent at all (most likely reason).

Other possible reasons:

A) A bend/twist in the chain itself. Or one of the links is especially sticky.

B) Badly worn jockey wheel (pulley as you call it :))

pulley ...jockey wheel....same...but different :)  thanks. The "jockey wheel" is not worn but I am starting to think bend/twist in chain itself. Could chain tension be a problem??

With your hand, backpedal slowly and watch the chain run around the cassette and through the derailleur. Look for any jumping/sticky links. And check each chain link individually for any damaged links.

If the chain is perfect, and the jockey wheels are too, then I'd say a bent derailleur cage is most likely issue (i.e. buy a new derailleur). Before you do that, ask your LBS to check for you - if you don't have a spare derailleur at home to test yourself.

A very outside possibility is if you recently took apart your rear derailleur for whatever reason, and then installed the inside cage upside down by mistake (I've done this).

Could be a bent derailleur hangar.  Also check that the pulley wheels are on correctly.  If Shimano the bottom one has a directional arrow and the top one has some "play" left to right on the holding bolt.

Get Shimano. SRAM derailleur cages do this. They're too wide at the bottom in my opinion. A mate of mine just puts a row of zip ties around the bottom part of his X9 cage and that solves the problem.

Ok so none of the above was the problem. The bearings in the bottom wheel pushed through to the outside which then scrape against the derailleur and the chain came off on the inside. Jaco from TBS popped it back into

position again and now all is fine. if what I have described here does not make sense....ask Hairy to explain.

I very much doubt SRAM would still be in business if this were the case. Been running their stuff for years and never had this problem.

If you need to zip tie your derailleur together you're missing something.

been using SRAm since 1999 and never had to zip tie one of their derailleurs cages together. People often don't replace their derailleur cage wheels often enough. Somehow they think the wheels will last forever

In order of likelihood:

Bent cage

Bent hanger

Worn pulleys

Chain length wrong

Cross chaining

sometimes when my legs are dead I will kick off the chain and do a "emergency trail side repair" till the legs start working again.......if the legs are bad, we are talking a full rebuild and suspension service on the side of the trail.....
