Couple of things:-

1.)  The new drafting rule is that you may draft until you pass.  I like it as it will sort out blocking and passing etc.  It basically means everyone has to keep left the whole time and only swerve slightly to pass.  It should get rid of the idiots who like to ride in the middle of the road all the way

2.)  EL's swim was apparently rough but for a non swimmer I swam a PB.  In my personal opinion swimming is 80% mental.  Lets not make more of it than it is.  When you entered you knew you had to swim in the ocean

3.)  I like the idea of testing the age groupers for doping.  They should however not only test the front runners but also a few middle and back markers to send out a clear message

Weather forecast at this stage---Sunday morning(Durban): 4m/s wind from West/northwest.

Good/bad ???

*really* good. Anything slightly offshore in that area will make it glassy and really smooth.

The waves are always more predictable like that. Sounds like you are in for a good swim.

It seems windy...  Is the bike route protected against wind?  What should we wish for if we want a tail wind coming back in?

If its offshore then its relatively protected through the first section heading out past La Lucia and Umhlanga but get a little more open closer to Ballito side.

You would need an east to be blowing for a tail wind.

Most of the coastal areas will have a bit off offshore early in the morning but it always swings later. East is more common than west though, many many years of surfing have taught me this.

So chances are fairly good that if you do a fast swim then the first bit of the cycle will be good, then hopefully headwind closer to the turn and tailwind back in.

It doesnt always play long though, so hopefully it goes your way.

I see there are various rule changes.  You are really have to try hard to get DQ'ed unlike in the past.  Straight red cards only for repeat offences or if you like punch a guy in the face.   Littering and earphones now has non-DQ cards.

I also see if the swim leg is cancelled then the race will continue as a run / bike still with a rolling start.

Interesting.  Looking forward to the smooth tar and warmer weather.

Anyone able to give me the SMS number for friends/family to track my progress?

Not sure if it will be the same as EL in Jan, that was 39408...

Yip it is...

Who are you supporting at the Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 Durban next weekend? Make sure you know exactly where they are on Race Day using the Vodacom Track an Athlete SMS service. SMS the athlete's race number to 39408 and you will receive real-time updates during the race. The service costs R15 and the proceeds go towards Ironman 4 the Kidz South Africa. The Track an Athlete SMS line is now open so get those race numbers registered!

If you don't want to receive updates but would still like to make the R15 donation, SMS the word KIDS to 39408.

Wind predicted at 4m/s on Sunday which is same as today. And it's barely noticeable. Any northerly wind will be a tailwind coming back (NE or NW) so there's a good chance there'll be a bit of a tailwind coming home.

Check out this website. It tells you the conditions and then shows you a photo of how the surf should look based on previous similar conditions

how accurate is this? (you say the conditions should be the same as today)

Most of the weather websites are predicting the same conditions. NW/NE wind, about 4ms, small surf, sunny, 20 degrees. Some of the surf websites say 3 foot surf, which is a bit bigger than in the photo on that website, but not much. So I'd say it's fairly accurate. But don't shoot me if it jacks up to howling 30kmh SW with 6 foot surf :-)

Don't worry, that means this born and bred free state boykie will drink beer and watch other people sweat.

*staying at the coast doesn't mean I like ocean swims

Sadly my race is done, 3 days away and im hit with the flu. I was really excited to do this having previously done Trirock.

Still hoping to make it down though, at least i could get a weekend away out of it.
