The double ones, is 11 speed really such an upgrade?

Having switched recently to the one by side of MTB'ing (and absolutely loving it!), the question beckons, is 11 gears really necessary? I have a XT 11-36t 10 speed coupled with a slightly large 36t. I agree the 36t is a bit big... quite large. But thats a problem I'm sorting out as soon as I can.

I've ridden Gauteng area's rides like: Groenkloof, Monument Park, and Red Barn and didn't once wish I had more gears. And with one up sprockets becoming more available and products like http://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/leo-general-lee-42t showing itself, the range of a 10 speed cassette can be greatly increased with it still being smooth.

Its, in my opinion, even possible in the near future that brands like sram and shimano will start making cassettes with a larger range, e.g. a 11-42t range. With a cassette like this, or a one-up sprocketized cassette, your range is large enough.

If there is a issue of smoothness, you could replace you 15t and 17t sprockets with a 16t, giving much smoother transition to your granny... gear.

So my question is, is the 11 speed worth the money, or even, is it necessary?

Mmmmmm I don't know about worth it or necessary but surely one of the big drawcards of the SRAM 11 speed is the 10-42 cassette? That provides a larger spread not only on the easy side which is what most are able to achieve these days pretty easy with a 10sp .....
