there is 26 000 registered cyclists with CSA . . . i read it somewhere . . .

yeah - read a similar number somewhere.  Interestingly it stated that the number was actually down from around 34 000 a couple years back.

I think this is purely down to CSA's performance (or lack there of) and not an actual decrease in cyclist number.

From CEO of MoreCycle (Cyclelab) - in 2014:

“Between 200 000-300 000 cyclists are participating in events and we perceive this figure to have double-digit growth at the moment,”

Based on that statement, lets say from 2014 to 2015 the industry did grow by 10% i.e. around 20 000 new cyclists.  I bet, the first race these 'new' cyclists put on their 'to-do' list is the Argus.  So, now suddenly, you have 20 000 extra people wanting to ride an already sold out event.

Explains why they were sold out in a few hours...

There are more than 35 000 cyclists (roadies mostly) doing the Argus.

But only about 1200 real cyclists (excluding offcourse the foreigners) - these are the ones doing the Epic. Only when you finished the epic are you considered to be a cyclist.

I would say it depends on what you classify as a cyclist. If it is viewed in the broad term of someone who owns a bike (both legit and illegit), I would say easily more than a million.

If you narrow it down to those that do as a sport, then the few 100 000 is more reasonable.

I like it!! Great definition. It excludes all the people who are not wealthy and are not ex rugby players.

Just like golf.

With that definition, only those who can physically + mentally + financially afford to take on the 7 day stage-race can classified as cyclist...
