The Spruit Chronicles - Issues ONE

"The good, the bad and damn ridiculous"

The Good

So an acquaintance visited from KZN this weekend and wanted to go for a ride somewhere, so I took him to the spruit, the best trail in Randburg. We rode from Fratelli's up to Emmarentia and back, lekker ride for me as always. But to my surprise at the end the ride the dude said, and I quote - "Best mountain biking I have ever done!"

Now I know that that there are a lot of Spuit haters out there, but I a KZNer had fun the it must be ok....

The Bad

I know it is a public space, the paths and track are open to everyone - walkers, runners, dogs, horses and the works. So I ask this to those people - Why do you walk on paths that are clearly bike paths? Routes, drops, jumps, etc but people and kids insist on walking over them, grrrrr. I would like to put up something like this on some of the paths...

The Ridiculous

I see a lot of people go down because of the deep, narrow single track, especially the guys/ladies that clipped in. So yesterday a lady topples(falls) over right in front of me, so I stop to help her up, as you do. But, lying there still half clipped and clearly struggling to get up, she shouts "I'M FINE, I'M FINE, LEAVE ME!" It's a fun day out, and mostly friendly people everywhere. **** happens, get over your self and enjoy the journey!

See you all out there! Soon with some coffee at the Head!

You have to remember most people are embarrassed and in a bit of shock with adrenalin flowing when they fall I have seen this a few times along with beginners panicking when they stop on a difficult section and you have to jump on the brakes to stop in time. They do all sorts of crazy things to get out the way and sometimes just injure themselves. I find it best just to stand aside for a bit and say its OK take it easy.

I only rode the spruit once and that deep narrow single track was totally new to me and I got both wheels sucked against a side a few times which is a bit daunting as it makes it very hard to turn and get back on line.

Pfffffft...to the OP, you have given the visitor from KZN the wrong idea: Jozi riders - well, Gauteng riders in general - are rude and aggressive. You have let the side down. You should have ridden over the lady who toppled. And not looked back.

more proof that the Spruit is not for average riders...

I am there this weekend ! .........

careful - didn't say who all goes topless.  Might get more than you bargain for!! (or put another way, you may have bitten off more than you can chew!!)

Even topless will not get me to the spruit...

Absa Johannesburg Spruit Epic.

I see opportunity here.

Absa Johannesburg Spruit Epic.

I see opportunity here.

I see more of an opportunity for Standard Bank, for an triathlon event, run, bike and swim.

Discovery can be on board as well to arrange insurance for the hospital treatment required afterwards for the spruit water nasties....
