In this quotation there was also R350 for a strip and rebuild, another non compliance with the CPA.

Just curious, how is that non-compliant?

You bought a new bike, bike brakes, you get a new frame and you get charged for assembling the new bike as quoted.

The first bike you bought was a complete bike.

Then they built your components onto the 57cm loan bike, was there a charge for this?

Then they built (or half built) your components onto the Bianchi and charged you R350?

In hindsight, that probably could have been waived but was it unreasonabe/non-compliant at the time?

Sometimes guys choose to do an upgrade on a warranty frame and when the old BB, seatpost, headset etc does not fit, they are billed for those parts. None of the manufacturers I work with are in the habit of sending new BB's, Seatpost or parts for free, neither does the shop foot the bill, when the old parts doesnt fit on the new frame. Sometimes the manufacturers try and assist as far as they can but you changed to another brand so I guess that wasnt an option.

They clearly messed up badly, not disputing that, just curious as how you came to that conclusion?

This story has a happy ending, Arshard the owner of Solomons has contacted me and will be refunding me in full for the frame, the parts that were supplied that were of no use and the labour.  I intend to remove the post once this has been processed.

I have only dealt with the Woodmead branch.  Always had excellent service from them and have seen them go the extra mile for myself and other customers as well.  I'm not saying that they do not make mistakes but the management certainly tries to sort problems out.

In my experience, the CPA is a fairly ambiguous piece of legislation.

On close inspection, you will find that there is as much in there to protect the Seller as there is the consumer.

Well done to Arshad for doing the right thing. I can understand that being a cycle store owner in SA can be daunting, and it is often we hear all the bad things that happen. I am sure this is not only limited to cycle shops, but is indicative of the retail climate in SA in general. It is refreshing to hear of a shop which was man enough to take ownership of a problem and take positive steps to remedy the situation.

Big applause to you sir, and if I ever visit Jozi, I will visit your store.

It is bit unrealistic to exoect that when you build all your components over from a broken bike to a new frame of a different type that all components will simply fit. Bikes have different BB's, deraileur mountings and cable routing. So it was fair in my view to charge you for the replacement components and to install them since it was YOUR instruction to elect for a different replacement frame.....however the poor workmanship and lack of care is not excusable.

I hope all is sorted now and going well.

I want to commend Solomons for great service.

At the CTCT Expo I bought a pair of Bontrager road shoes from them. In the tumult of it all at their stand, i somehow came away with a pair that was a size too big.

I took it back their store at Woodmead where I encountered a most friendly and efficient gentleman, Aghtar. I explained to him what had happened. He did not have stock of my size, but said he would get a pair and sms me once he had them. True to his word, by 9am the next morning, I had an sms from Aghtar, and I had the right pair in my grubby paws later that day.

Oh yes, the shoes were at a real good price.

Thanks Aghtar, it was a pleasure dealing with you - I'll be back!

Solomon's is a firm favourite of mine - always good service, always stock (or they make a plan) and always good selection of gear. I do service my own bike so no comment on their work shop. Big up to Achter for correcting the issue.
